Wonder Woman DVD

The DC Extended Universe really needed a win at the start of the 2017 Blockbuster season. The attempts to get their shared super-heroic universe off the ground has been tricky to say the least. Three films in: Man of Steel, Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Suicide Squad, all made solid money at the box office but were slammed by critics for their shoddy filmmaking, and dark tone. Then there is a beacon of light for critics and fans alike, and her name is Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman Review

After making her debut, and easily being the best, in Batman vs Superman, hopes were high for Wonder Woman's big screen debut. The film surpassed these expectations and has become, not only the best DCEU movie so far, but also one of the best films of 2017.

Set during World War One, Wonder Woman, played by the excellent Gal Gadot, must leave her island home of Themyscira with the aid of crashed air force pilot Steve Trevor, played by Chris Pine, to stop the war god Ares. The plot is simple enough, with more than a passing resemblance to some Marvel films, but that isn't what makes Wonder Woman such a good film.

Crucially, it is Wonder Woman herself: with Gadot showing off the physicality, along with excellent comic time, of an old-fashioned hero. Unlike the previous DC Extended Universe films, there is a distinct and very welcome lack of angst. Diana enjoys being a hero, she enjoys doing the right thing, and thanks to director Patty Jenkins, she is as formidable as any Man of Steel, or Dark Knight. Apart from the almost perfunctory CGI-filled finale, Wonder Woman gets everything right. Good action, good jokes, and great chemistry between its two leads. After watch Wonder Woman the prospect of Justice League will seem a lot more exciting.
