Argos is one of the UK's biggest non-food shopping chains, with sales of over £2bn.
They are the number 1 retailer for toys & small electrical appliances, and a leading player in many other markets including DIY and gardening, consumer electronics and furniture.
They also have a sizable market share in jewellery, sports equipment, DIY products & furniture.
Founded in 1973, Argos was the pioneer of catalogue retailing in the UK .
After nearly 6 years as a private company they were acquired by B.A.T. Industries Limited in 1979, and then demerged in 1990. Argos became a limited company again, then it was acquired by GUS plc in 1998.
Argos is now part of the Argos Retail Group, owned by GUS plc.
Argos, which was launched in 1973, has almost 500 stores throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland. Approximately 98% of the UK population live within 10 miles of an Argos store.
Argos had sales in the last financial year of £2.8 bn.
Over the next three years Argos is planning to open around 35 new argos stores a year employing an additional 2,000 a year.
All remaining small argos stores are to be refurbished by March 2004.
Argos is to grow capacity and improve customer service in Argos Direct, the delivery to home operation. Sales via Argos Direct grew by 50% compared to last year. It accounted for 16% of Argos' sales - up from 12% last year. Preparation for the construction of the new Argos Direct warehouse has started, with completion planned before the end of the current financial year.
