M&S - Marks and Spencer Information
M&S
one of the most recognized high street retailers in the UK known
for both their clothing and fresh food range - with over a century's
retail expertise M and S (or Marks & Sparks as they
have also also been lovingly referred to) have established nearly
four hundred stores including their flagship London store at marble
arch which occupies over 170,000 square feet of prime Marks and
Spencer retail space.
M&S Group History
The M&S brand first started up in the North of England
at both Manchester and Leeds with the partnership of Michael Marks
a polish refugee and Tom Spencer. In the mid 1920's this partnership
evolved into a public company and a few years later the famousSt
Michael trademark was registered. The company quickly established
a proud tradition for high quality clothing at prices affordable
to most. Their research and war effort during the war periods
served the company well and they emerged as a British household
name during this period. By the mid 1970's they had opened branches
in mainland Europe and the mid 1980's saw expansions in range
to encapsulate both furniture into their stores and financial
M and S services with their store card. M and S currently
operate in over twenty five countries mostly in Europe, the Middle
East, Asia and the Far East and they also own the US supermarket
group, Kings Super Markets. They currently employ over 65 thousand
staff with an annual turnover that many companies would be envious
of - reaching over £7 billion and a strong leadership under
the relatively new Chief Executive Stuart Rose (appointed in 2004).
