John Lewis - John Lewis Information
There are over twenty-five John Lewis Patnership department
stores throughout Britain with a group turnover of over £5
billion for 2004. During their 75 years in partnership their stores
have established a strong tradition for outstanding service, choice
and value.
John Lewis Partnership History
The first John
Lewis store opened in 1864 in Oxford Street, London with
a first day takings of 16 shillings and four pence. From these humble
beginning and with the Trust Settlement and legality assured the
John Lewis Partnership emerged in the late 1920's. In 1937
the Waitrose grocery chain was purchased. In 1955 the first Waitrose
supermarket store opened, by 1992 there were 100 Waitroses stores
across the country, but a large proportion of these are located
in the South. In 2000 they took a significant share of the online
grocery service Ocado and a year later saw the launch of the John
Lewis online store. In 2004 the partnership celebrated its 75th
anniversary of the first Trust Settlement alongside the centenary
of Waitrose stores and the groups highest recorded annual turnover
of over £5 billion.
John Lewis Dept Stores
Since the first John Lewis Dept store in London opened in
the 1860's the principles of outstanding service and quality fare
have ensured customer loyalty and consequently openings of further
stores throughout the country. The number of stores stands at over
twenty five, and the John Lewis Partnership is one of the UK's top
ten retail businesses. These stores occupy over five million square
feet of space and offer a wide range of choice geared to meet all
customers' needs for both fashion and household goods all under
one single roof. Store locations can be found in city centre areas
such as John Lewis Edinburgh, out of town shopping (i.e.
Cheadle store) and within large shopping malls like at Bluewater.
John Lewis Online Services
With the launch in 2001 of their online service you find the same
prices and service as you do in the John Lewis stores. Whilst not
all their store stock and services are available online the online
store still offers a vast range of products for online purchase.
They have over ten departments online including audio & TV,
computing, fashion, furniture, home & garden, nursery, sports
& leisure. Furthermore additional services also available on
line include the John Lewis wedding list service which is
part of their phenomenally popular gift service.
