Green Flag has been helping motorists in the UK with roadside assistance since 1971. Initially the firm was called National Breakdown but in 1994 changed their name to Green Flag. That is not to say they forgot their heritage - National Breakdown was known for their innovation in the sector - it was the 1st recovery service to take motorists and vehicles back home with their 'get-you-home' service. GreenFlag was also the first company to start including motorway recovery. They were also the first in the sector to enable customers to use freephone numbers when facing a breakdown and were also the first to introduce a fully computerised control room in order to locate stranded members. Greenflag continues this proud heritage and has remained innovative to customers needs. In 1999 they launched their European roadside assistance scheme and in 2003 Greenflag breakdown cover included real-time incident updates via SMS text messaging for customers with mobile phones.

Both are equipped to respond to over 1,000,000 calls per year giving help to customers in need 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Greenflag breakdown cover has 5,000,000 customers worldwide. Of those customers requiring roadside recovery 8 out of 10 vehicles are fixed by the road by their 20,000 competent mechanics (just over a quarter are based in the UK and the remaining cover Europe). Breakdown recovery services include cover at home, long distance vehicle recovery, roadside recovery, SMS message service, money to collect your car & European cover. For 2004 & 2005 Green Flag services were awarded by readers of 'Your Money' magazine both as 'Best online breakdown cover provider' & 'Best breakdown cover provider'. Green Flag also picked up the UK Roadside Assistance Company of 2005 at the Institute of Transport Management awards.
