Dixons History in Brief
The first Dixons shop opened in 1937 as a photographic
studio and marked the partnership of Charles Kalms & Michael
Mindel. It wasn't until the 1950's with their branch out into
selling new and second hand photographic equipment that Dixons
became the leading photographic dealer in the UK sector. Offering
competitively-priced products with quality service ensured successive
Dixons shops openings. Rapid expansions in the 1960's and
1970's as a result of acquisitions of competitors as well as diversification
of the product range saw the emergence of the Dixons group
in the 1980's. The Dixons brand name continues to grow
from strength to strength with well placed store openings throughout
the UK during this period. 1994 saw the first Dixons duty free
store opening at Heathrow airport which proved so successful that
many more followed at major British airports. Continuing innovations
in retails led to the launch in October 1997 of the first electrical
goods Internet home shopping service - Dixons online. More
recently a new large store format was launched in 2002 with the
first Dixons xL store in Cardiff at 26,000 square ft (ten
times bigger than the average Dixons store). Current Dixons figures

Dixons Online
Dixons was the first company in the UK to offer an electrical
goods home shopping service through the Internet. The launch in
1997 enabled 24/7 purchasing of over 2,000 items online for home
delivery. It was quickly followed a year later by by a complete
face lift following customers needs offering even greater choice
and value for money. Today Dixons online offers the newest
technology online for UK customers. With over ten departments
to browse or search through it includes their original specialism
of cameras and camcorders and digital cameras, as well as the
latest innovations in computing, MP3 and other portable audio
goods, televisions and gaming.
