Store is the UK's favourite department chain with approximately
16% of the market share and annual profits of around £300
million (2003/4 figures).
Debenhams have over two hundred years experience within the retail
industry. 2005 will mark the first centennial celebration of the
opening of the first Debenhams department store. Declared
as an independent company and listed on the London Stock Exchange
in 1928 they grew in strength following and adapting to changes
in retail trends and fashions during the consumer booms in the
1960's and 1970's.
In the mid 1980's new management came under the Burton group
and extended the increasing number of Debenhams shops placed
at strategic locations throughout the UK. This partnership led
to the development of many of their own brand labels that followed
and strengthened their tradition of offering high quality contemporary
fashion in both clothing and home furnishings and accessories.
In the late 1990's this partnership ended and Debenhams plc became
independent again. In late 2003 the household department chain
Debenhams was acquired by CVC Capital Partners, Texas Pacific
Group, Merrill Lynch Global Private Equity and the Management
team whilst continuing to acquire brands exclusive designers and
develop own brands that further enhance their reputation. Debenhams
during this time has also established an international presence
in both Asia, Europe and the Middle East with a number of successful
franchises. The company projects further store expansions in both
the UK and overseas markets during the next four years, hoping
to improve market share and further enhance their brand Internationally.
Debenhams online shopping was launched in 2001. Their
departments include children's, men's and women's clothing; holidays,
electrical's, home & furnishings and gifts. Extra services
available through the Internet include their award winning Debenhams
wedding service which includes guidance as well as stationery,
favours, bridal wear and wedding list service.
