Argos is oneof the United Kingdom's largest non-food retail stores, with sales over £2bn.
They're the number 1 retailer for toys & for small electrical appliances, and a leading player in other markets including DIY and gardening, consumer electronics and furniture.
They have also got a significant market share in jewellery, sports equipment, DIY products and furniture.
Founded in 1973, Argos was the pioneer of catalogue retailing in the UK .
After nearly six years as a private company they were acquired by BAT Industries Limited in 1979, and then demerged in 1990. Argos became a limited company again until it was acquired by GUS plc in 1998.
Argos is now part of the Argos Retail Group, and that is owned by GUS plc.
Argos, which was launched in 1973, has almost five hundred stores throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland. Approximately 98% of the UK population live within 10 miles of an Argos store.
In the last financial year Argos had sales of £2.8 bn.
During the next three years Argos is planning to open 35 new stores a year employing an additional 2,000 a year.
All remaining small stores are to be refurbished by March 2004.
Argos is to grow capacity & improve customer service in Argos Direct, the delivery to home operation. Sales via Argos Direct grew by 50% compared to last year. It accounted for 16% of Argos' sales - up from 12% last year. Preparation for the construction of the new Argos Direct warehouse has started, with completion planned before the end of the current financial year.
