Amazon Book History

Amazon book launch in the UK was in 1998, but the UK Amazon book store's origins were established much earlier in 1996 under the name of Bookpages which was an independent online book retailer until acquired by Amazon in early 1998. With its launch in October of the same year the Amazon book store revolutionized the book retail market with their specialized database which offers both professional and customer reviews along with ideas of what else may be of interest determined by other purchases made by existing customers who purchased that item. UK Amazon books range of titles is vast - on launch they had over 1.4 million titles. Whilst their stock continuously expanded the next major increase came in November 2003 where an alliance with the British Library added a further 2.5 million titles so that rare, antiquarian and pre-ISBN* books can be made available to buy online. In fact around 1.7 million of these titles in the Amazon book UK store were dated before the 1970 introduction of ISBN. The latest large book Amazon stock increase for the online store was in February 2005 with their partnership with Talis (from which most library's in the UK list their stock) which offer libraries a way of recycling stock and increased the range of used and collectable stock on offer from Amazon books.co.uk.
