Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 2

The first Guardians of the Galaxy was a colossal risk for Marvel. Before this the Marvel Cinematic Universe was full of characters that most fans were familiar with, and late-comers at least had an idea of. Guardians was different. Based on a popular cult comic, this was the least mainstream team-up Marvel could have attempted after the success of The Avengers. The result was simple: Guardians of the Galaxy was a huge success, with many fans actually preferring director James Gunn's cosmic misfits to Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Now the question is, can they do it again?

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2 DVD Review

Could they do it again, we asked? Repeat the success of the first Guardians movie? Yes, of course they can. When you have a talking raccoon with violent tendencies and deep personality issues, a sentient tree, a ruthless warrior that has just discovered the joy of laughter, and one of the MCU's stronger romantic pairings in a daughter of Thanos and a space cowboy, you basically have cinematic gold dust.

Vol 2 sees Starlord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot separated from each other after a job gone wrong. Starlord, along with Gamora and Drax meet a celestial being named Ego (Kurt Russell), who claims to be Starlord's father. Meanwhile Rocket, Groot, and Yandu, who has been betrayed by his crew are captured by space pirates.

The main strength of Vol 2 is the characters. Sure, Gunn goes all out on the action, with some spectacularly creative set-pieces, and another spin on a jail break, but it's the relationships that are the key to the films quality. Thanks to a script full of zingers, and brilliant performances from the entire cast, Vol 2 is a deeply satisfying sequel, while also proving that Gunn is a little better at handling a big cast of characters than Joss Whedon and the Russo Brothers. Now for Volume 3.
