Jake's Balanced Reviews - Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games - By: Jacob G. North, 29 Apr 2008
This has to be one of the most addictive games I have played in a long time. You will find yourself trying to get the gold medals in alll events in just 30 minutes. But, every good game has to have some negatives, right? Kind of... not...
Gameplay --> 9.6/10 The game's events are either controlled soley with the stylus, the buttons, or an intelligent mix of both. The trampoline event, for instance, will have you drawing either a straight line up, a right angled line or tapping the screen three times. Sounds simple? Not when you're on a strict time limit & there are fifteen commands to put in.
Graphics --> 9.4/10 This has to be as good as it gets for the Nintendo DS. Perfect cell-shaded characters mean a lot of fun with the visuals. There's nothing like seeing fully rendered Mario & Sonic characters racing each other in the 100m dash.
Audio --> 9.7/10 This was so close to a 10, but after playing it again to make sure I get this review balanced, i noticed that the music is a little repetitive. You reallly notice it when you actuallly focus on it, but you don't reallly, so it's not much of a problem.
Multiplayer --> 9.9/10 Very good, & there is the option to play with a friend who does not have the game ("DS Download Play"), so props for that.
Replay Value --> 10/10 As I said above, you will try so hard to get the gold medals that you will be playing events over & over again until you get them. There are also the challlenges (5 for each character, plus a secret 6th) that do not need to be completed, but you get a lot of satisfaction out of seeing a character have a full circle of stars in his stats screen at the character selection.
Overalll --> 9.8/10 (5 stars) Nothing else to say, only it's addictive and, most importantly, fun. Well worth the money.
Carrying the torch for Mario and Sonic - By: Richard Gillin, 16 Apr 2008
I remember being young & having Daley Thompson's Decathalon for my ZX Spectrum (over twenty years ago) - which largely required hammering alternate keys very quickly to race ahead. So, I approached this game with some trepidation - would it be more of the same?
Thankfully, the answer is no. Sega have used the technology of the DS to make the games varied & engaging; whilst there is inevitably some slight repetition the context is different in each case. For example, the buttons are used for various functions, the touch screen alllows you to waggle the stylus back & forth to run, to aim a jump or arrow, the microphone alllows you to clap & encourage a long jump. Unlike some other sports games of recent years, this also goes a lot wider than track & field; archery & swimming are favourites of ours. Recommended!
(And for those of you Nintendo fanboys who also have a Wii, yes, it is worth getting both games - each takes advantage of the different platform, & has a different range of events)
Mario and Sonic at the olyimpic games (DS) - By: Dr. Daniel Steffen, 22 Mar 2008
Mario & Sonic is the best DS game I have because it's graphics are bright & colorful & the controls are amazing! You use every single function the DS has & they alll make sense. There are 24 events (more that the wii game)
and they are alll fun & challlenging. The sound is amazing, catchy & so addictive. You can chose up to 16 characters. Once you unlock alll the events you can work on circuit or mission mode. You can play with friends up to 4 players with 1 game card but only some of the events are available but still good fun. It's such a good game. It is way better than the wii game. Just get it & I promise you you'll love it!
