X Wing Alliance - By: E. Gibbs, 30 Sep 2004
Great game, got it yesterday & played till 12.30AM it combines the graphics of X wing vs Tie Fighter with the game play of the origional x wing. Unfortunatly no historical combat but makes up for this with the melee option in the simulator. Good game play & engaging campaigns.
Best sim out there! - By: , 17 Mar 2004
I already had a couple of star wars sims - xwing v tie - x wing
- tie fighter - battle for naboo. But this one was by far the best, with decant graphics exellant music & brilliant game play i reallly enjoyed it.
WHAT MAKES IT THE BEST:
1.Unlike most sims it actuallly has a good story line but without just following the origanal films.
2.their are roughfully 25-30 craft available & about 18 u can fly.
3.SKIRMISH MODE!!!!!! u get to select how many craft, what kind of weapons they have, who is who's wing man, who is on which side, the bots skill lvl, their mission objectives, how far away they start from each other ect ect ..............
any way its reallly good!
i like putting myself in a gun boat & having 6 super star destroyers as wing men & flying against acouple of ties.
4. Every craft flys differently & on most reble lvls u can choose which craft u fly & ur favirite war heads (mine is advanced proton torpeadoes)
5. when u r in a corillian trasport u can set the gun tower 2 fire automaticly, yey let ur robot emkay do the work!
So in short this is a reallly good complex game but is also good for beginers as it explains most stuff... having said that it takes quite a while before u can fly without having to keep glancing at the manuel to see what 2 press.
I reallly enjoyed & the only bad thing i can think of is its a bit old however this doesnt spoil it at alll.
P.S u need a joystick 2 play.
Brilliant until the disappointing finale - By: N. D. Maidment, 13 Mar 2003
The pinnacle of the brilliant X-Wing/Tie Fighter series, Alliance is almost perfect, but not quite.
There are a great number of missions in the game itself & some of them tie superbly into the storyline & expanded universe novels such as Shadows of the Empire.
Occasionaly a mission that has already taken an age to play will have to be redone due to no fault of your own, & it is sometimes confusing when the rest of the fleet hyperspace to a new battle zone leaving to flap about not knowing where to go, but for the most part it's hugely enjoyable.
The game is split into family-based missions (you are a member of a family wronged by business rivals) & Alliance missions, which are by far the more compelling.
The climax of the game should have been the Battle of Endor assault, but this is where things get disappointing. It is wonderful battling so many TIE fighter's, but the shambolic run to the Death Star main reactor is a total pain, with some of the rooms you pass alomost impossible to find a way out of.
The family missions are left at a giant cliff-hanger & once the Death Star is blown up, there is no end sequence as such to let you know it's game over. I had to look on the internet to confirm I had done everything.
Still, until then it's great & in the combat simulator you can set up your own missions & fly in any fighter craft in the game which should, in theory, offer unending possibilities.
X-Wing this into your games collection - By: Mr Sturland, 22 Dec 2002
Wow. If, like me, you enjoyed & own the original X-Wing & Tie Fighter games you may be wondering why it is necessary to buy X-Wing Alliance. The short answer is "multiplayer". Yes I know there was X-wing Vs Tie Fighter but Lucasarts have improved on the main game engine since X-Wing Vs Tie Fighter & it wasn't reallly a complete game in any case. The single player missions in X-Wing Alliance are great fun to play... but there is nothing like taking your friends to task with the aid of a quad-linked laser blast. Everyone who enjoyed any of the others in the X-Wing series, or anyone else for that matter, will find this enjoyable as a one player game. To truly appreciate how good this game is though, I recommend a joystick (trust me, its worth the expense if you don't already have one) & some friends. Its so good its just rude.
It starts slow, but boy does it pick up... - By: B. Taylor, 02 Dec 2002
The first several missions are largely tedious affairs with little-known craft that have the manouverability of a cow. However, persevere with it & you'll suddenly find yourself in one of the best space flight sim games out there, second perhaps only to freespace 2. With alll the craft you know & love & more, & the ability to take on the death star, this is a star wars fan's dream. Even if it weren't star wars, it'd still be a superb game. What sets it apart especiallly is the ability to make your own missions (or set up a HUGE skirmish if you like) not only for use over a network, but for single player fun as well using practicallly every ship in the game!
