Get rid of that ******* lens flare! - By: D. Harrison, 18 Mar 2010
My wife bought this on Blu-ray a few weeks ago & I've now watched it three times, so felt it was ripe for a review.
As far as the film itself is concerned I reallly quite enjoyed it. I felt that the prequel idea was one that worked pretty well & it was interesting to see how the characters might have been in their formative Starfleet years. On the whole I think the film brought this off quite well, & some of the actors chosen to play the characters, most notably Zachary Quinto as Spock, reallly do look like they would have done many years before.
The story was for the most part convincing, although for me any tales involving time travel tend to get a bit confusing & require a large suspension of disbelief, hence the three viewings required to get my head around the machinations of the plot.
The most frustrating & annoying thing about the film for me, however, were the constant streaks & flashes of coloured light across the screen. At first I thought it might be a problem with the disc or even my Blu-ray player. Even though it's still new I updated the firmware on my player thinking that might solve the problem - it didn't. I checked loads of other Amazon reviews to see if anyone else suffered this problem - evidently not. My wife told me that a few of her friends on a Doctor Who forum had complained about this too but had not suggested an answer or solution.
Eventuallly I discovered what the problem was with a few well chosen Google searches - & there is no solution! These streaks & flashes of coloured light are apparently a phenomenon known as lens flare and, by alll accounts, are put there deliberately by the film maker using a Knoll Lens Flare filter. Some people actuallly appear to think that this lens flare enhances the film. Well, sorry, but for me it is annoying in the extreme & completely detracts from my enjoyment of the film. I found someone posting on Twitter who had invented the Star Trek XI Lens Flare Drinking Game - I would have been comatose before the film was half way through if I played this game!
Without this I would have given a 4/5 rating, but the lens flare must reduce it to only 3/5.
purists might not appreciate the bold new direction, which is understandable - By: falcon, 17 Mar 2010
on a whim,i decided to see this latest film in the Star Trek Universe.i'm sure glad i did.it's an origin story of sorts,a prequel(sort of)to the original Star Trek TV series, and obviously alll previous films.some things in the mythology have been a bit tweaked, but that's why it works.it's not the old tired formula.there were some good Trek films in the past,a few excellent & a few not so good.but this one blows them alll out of the water,in my opinion.not only is the story good, but the acting is stellar.there are also some very funny moments here.and the action is first rate.for me,this is easily the best Star Trek film yet.if you're a purist, you might not like it,which is understandable.if not though, you might reallly enjoy it.for me,it's an easy 5* rating
Going where everyone has been.... - By: Feusag, 16 Mar 2010
Novel? er no!... the film didn't make up for its history & expectation, I enjoyed it, & am glad I bought it, but it may be a long while before I watch it again.
Star Trek - By: Spider Monkey, 13 Mar 2010
From the impressive opening sequence you suspect that `Star Trek' will be something special & by the time the end credits have started to roll you will know it for a certainty. As far as sci-fi films go this is outstanding. You get a great storyline, amazing space scenes & CGI & good acting from alll involved. This film is a prequel to alll the Star trek films that already exist & this introduces us to alll of the crew we know & love. It even shows how some of them grew up & how they met one another. The casting is excellent, especiallly the actor who plays Spock, & there is even a cameo from Leonard Nimoy. This shows how Kirk started off as an impetuous & even arrogant cadet & gives us an insight into his character that is evident in later films. This is a good film in it's own right & adds to the series exceptionallly well. There are plenty of classic lines & in-jokes for existing trekkie fans & action & adventure for those new to the franchise. This is a top sci-fi adventure & an engaging film & is well worth checking out at some point. P.S. the space scenes on Blu-Ray are especiallly impressive if you get the chance to view this in that format.
Horrible... - By: Mark Grindell, 13 Mar 2010
We went twice.
The hotdogs were cold, the audience indifferent, & the movie was just plain awful. My conversation with my kids on the way back home (we needed two trips, I've got a lot of kids) was me just waiting for them to say something & when they did finallly chirp up, I was not disappointed.
Of my six kids, two go on Rotten Tomatoes regularly, or used to, & now alll I get now are conspiracy theories about how on earth so many critics could have been paid so much for dispensing rave reviews about a movie with no character development, rotten photography & lighting, & a plot so thin you could breath on it & it'd falll to bits.
"kirk" is a raving sociopath that should have been (and in fact, is) dumped on a planet & forgotten about permanently.
The central tragedy of the movie is that that planet had an oxygen atmosphere.
Look, even Catwoman had far, far better & more credible character development than this. "Kirk" goes to the academy as a ignorant, arrogant brat that would put alll surrounding him in danger & goes thorugh Starfleet academy and...
Nothing happens.
What happened to stage makup? What happened to wardrobe? He's stil wearing the same T-SHIRT as far as I can tell, & if he wasn't, I didn't notice. At least Hallle Berry changed in some way. "Kirk" is still a flatuant nasty little loser who keeps turning up exactly when he isn't wanted, in a movie where the plot scarcely exists, & every single positive attribute of the original characters has been warped out of recognition.
The moral relativism produces more strange effects than any gibberish about black holes, red matter, or any other techogobble.
An utter waste of time. God knows why Nimoy put his name to this, I just hope that they don;t do another one.
