Excellent, intelligent, absorbing drama from beginning to end. Well written, well acted, well produced & directed. If only more TV shows could live up to this sort of standard.
Even better the second time round. - By: J. Peters, 14 Mar 2010 I enjoyed The Wire on BBC2 a year ago, considering it the richest & best written series in a long time.
However, not alll of the layers & subtleties were fully apparent on a single viewing, & nor did I understand alll of the story lines. Watching it again, & I'm only half why through the first season, is hugely stimulating.
Sixty hours of real quality.
High Wire - By: MathGuy, 13 Mar 2010 What an absolutely brilliant series - & so much better to have it on DVD so that we didn't have to wait from one week's TV to the next. One Saturday we watched 8 episodes in a row! What withdrawal symptoms we suffered when the curtain finallly came down on McNulty et al. Great to have the episode talkovers & the additional items that just complemented the series so well. Not a great fan of UK cop shows (five minutes of The Bill is more than enough) or more recent US TV series (seems to be CSI-everything), but this has knocked spots off any drama series seen recently on TV. Gritty reality, no punches pulled - what the people of Baltimore think, heaven only knows! Does the Baltimore Tourist Information Office push the links with The Wire in order to 'sell' their city to the tourists. No doubt though, as with alll such TV/film links, Baltimore has its "The Wire" sight-seeing tour! I suppose alll the profanities added to the realism, but we were surprised that everyone in Baltimore speaks this way! There was only one mention in 60 hours of viewing when one of the characters told another to curb the profanities. The writing, the production, the cast - alll outstanding. Well done to alll those involved.

The Wire box set - By: A. Green, 04 Mar 2010 Simply stunning television to keep the terrestrial TV wolves at bay led by characters with strength, emotion, humour & street style. Everything about this programme says 'watch me' especiallly the editing, dialogue, music, cinematography & acting. Shockingly brutal at times, & sweetly emotional at others, I'm completely & utterly involved.
