Good, but not great! - By: I. R. Barnes, 04 Jul 2008
Well it seems that a lot more people than I realised didn't like this movie, which is a little disappointing as I thought it was pretty good, ok so it isn't in the same league as Liman's Bourne Identity, but it's a pretty original & entertaining slice of sci-fi fun! In this respect it's refreshing that it doesn't take itself too seriously like so many other sci-fi films that try to be too 'epic' for their own good when they clearly just don't have the legs for it! The concept of teleportation is reallly interesting & Liman does an excellent job of conveying it on screen both visuallly & by explaining the mechanics behind it - clever stuff. However there are several disappointing aspects to this film, the main one is Hayden Christensen who is an amazingly bad actor & manages to bring down the entire film! In contrast to him though Jamie Bell does a very good job with his character, & Samuel L. Jackson is always easy to watch! So will there be a Jumper 2 as the ending implies? Well there is plenty of room to explore the story further & certainly lots of room for improvement, which in a way is better for a sequel than if the first film was brilliant to try & live up to & exceed, which is often why sequels are never as good! I for one would like to see a sequel but will the disappointing performance of the first film at the box office justify one, we'll have to wait & see.
Enjoyable bit of hokum - By: ray dorrity, 02 Jul 2008
I've read alll the other reviews & I think what they have missed is that this movie is just a bit of entertainment. No message, no profound statements - just a bit of fun.
Effects are great & the actors don't mumble & actuallly can be understood.
The movie was based on a book by Steven Gould whom I think poached the idea from Alfred Bester's 1956 book "Stars My Destination" ("Tiger, Tiger" in the USA) with the "Jumpers" only being able to "Jump" to places they are familiar with.
But, having said alll that, it's a nice little tight film. Great for a wet & windy afternoon in front of the fire.
Buy & enjoy
Jumper 2? - By: A. Buckley, 01 Jul 2008
I went to this film expecting loads of action, an awesome story & some cool powers that I wish I had. But I came out slightly disapointed. It was kind of like when you record a film off the television. You get drawn into the story as the film progresses & just as it gets to the climax it stops because it hasn't recorded the end of the film, you get reallly pissed off & go away disapointed. Thats what I felt like with Jumper. It felt like it needed an extra 30 minutes on the end. But on the other hand Jumper 2 is set for 2011.
I'd be pretty happy with a sequel though because overalll it was a pretty awesome film. Although after watching Star Wars Episode II & III, I couldn't figure out whether I didn't like Hayden Christensen or whether it was just the films themselves. I now see that it was Hayden Christensen that I didn't reallly like.
However, I think I can forgive the slightly poor acting of Christensen because the directing was absolutely out of this world. Doug Liman has done an excellent job of bringing this story to the screen. The jumping was incredible & it totallly looked real (apart form one time when Christensen jumped over to the fridge, but that was his fault). I can't wait for the DVD so I might get some insight into how it was filmed because there are sequences when they are fighting & jumping simultaniously & my God they are good.
I kind of have mixed feelings about this film. But I think it is safe to say that the good out way the bad. Plus its got Samuel L. Jackson in it & he is definitly cool. I'd recommend it to anyone who loves action films, just don't say I didn't warn you though when your disapointed by the ending.
A good idea, but an awful story - By: Colin Jones, 30 Jun 2008
I wasnt expecting anything awesome from watching this film, but I was expecting something more than what I got shown.
There was praticallly no story. None, whatsoever. It just felt like a guy with special powers of teleportation (morallly screwed in the head & uses them for evil, steals money from banks to make himself rich) goes on a tour of the world.. & you're invited!..
There was no backstory for S.L Jackson's character, there was no history behind the origin of this teleportation thing. And to top it off, we have Christensen as the lead role. Oh, how that was a poor decision.
I just think that for such a good concept, something with more depth shouldve bee created. But it wasnt. I mean a superhero with teleporation powers (besides Nighcrawler) is fascinating. But theres no fascinating adventure in this film, just running away alot & a tour of the world.
