It's a mad mad world! - By: Mary Burnham, 22 Jan 2010
Subtle! That's the word that best describes Mad Men. The writing is superb, the actors are pitch perfect, & the setting is the unbelievable world of advertising in the 60s when everyone smoked their way through the day, drank long before the sun went down over the yardarm, when women were kept in the typing pool or the bedroom (or a heady mix of both). In fact, you might say, what's changed other than the workers huddled in doorways puffing their way to an early death. I'm waiting for series two with bated breath!

Masterly - By: The Fisher Price King, 28 Dec 2009
This series moves slowly, but is alll the better for it in my opinion. It has a strong underlying story, but more important to its success is its sense of a particular historical period & the character of that era. It's detailed & atmospheric. It is also superbly acted. Not for people who like fast-paced drama, but if you enjoy a show with which you can take your time, & in which you can slowly become immersed, this is one of the best things to have been on TV in the last few years & has the production values & attention to writing that I have come to expect from HBO.
Very good idea - By: helene gerard, 04 Nov 2009
Excellent portrait of post-war America through subtle characters & situations.
This is where today's world comes from...
Enjoy !
Nothing is either Good or Bad, but Marketing makes it so... - By: Barbara Sapp, 03 Nov 2009
Very few series have I come across after a season or two's release & remained glued to the screen. With Mad Men season one I experienced for the first time digitallly that same heightened sense of voyeuristic joy & disappointment as when the pages of a good book dwindle towards the back cover. A sly, soft focus remake of my parent's America, the same slim single breasted suits & skinny ties that my father wore, my mother's crinolines & clutch purses. Zippos & lipstick. Wing tips & tail fins. Cadillacs & Frigidaires. All the happiness that money could buy, splashed across the magazines & billboards that were nudging us to do so... And just beneath this shiny surface, the pervasive political, religious & sexual tension characteristic of a seemingly well ordered society. Fifty years on we ask ourselves, were we happy ? We sure looked it in the snap shots. Or is it that, with hindsight, we are nostalgic for what now seems a more innocent kind of social malaise ? Ignorance was Bliss...
TV at its best. - By: A. R. Jacubs, 28 Oct 2009
A truly wonderful series with incredible acting & costumes to match the period. I lived & worked in London through the late fifties & the sixties. Although this is set in New York I can see remarkable similarities with my experiences. I developed such a love/hate relationship with so many of the characters & could not wait for series 2 to be released. I missed it on TV so thank goodness for Amazon.co.uk who supplied me with hours of enjoyment via the DVD.
