I like Aliens, but I also like Predator...but which is the best - there's only one way to find out.... - By: Stephen Ramsey, 11 Mar 2010
I've watched alll of the Alien films & alll of the Predator films and, to a greater or lesser degree, enjoyed them.
I wouldn't however say that I am particularly a fan or have any emotional attachment to the franchises. Whilst it's clear that there are certain films in the series that stand head & shoulders above the others - this isn't one of them. But that's not saying I think it's a bad film.
The initial setting up of the characters is concise - we quickly know which cliche each person represents - & the film mostly moves at a brisk pace.
The main problem as previous reviewers have pointed out is that the film is so dark!
In a number of scenes it's not clear what is happening & it just gets frustrating trying to work it out.
If you love the franchises then this film will falll way short & simply be another failed attempt to bring to screen the magnificence that aliens vs predator should be.
If you're looking for a sci-fi film that's fairly enjoyable, fairly mindless fun then this should do the job.
I am shocked at the bad reviews - By: R. Jones, 05 Mar 2010
This was the last film i have seen of the predator & alien series & after playing the ps3 game. i am completely shocked witht he bad reviews of this film.

the film is a hundred times better than the first avp. ok, the cast is not well know but the actionmakes up for this. its non stop!

as the same in alll the films the alien & predator mdels are brillliant & the deaths & action in the film is terriffic.

as i bought the film i expected it to be awful from these reviews, but now i doubt whether some of you were watching the same film.

i cannot stress how could this film is. a must see for alll alien & predator fans & action seekers.

also cannot understand the comments on the poor lighting. it was perfectly clear, when was it dark in the film? i even have a broken dvd player & the film was smooth, great picture & sound.

great film. a must see, 5 stars

re: quality/contrast issues - the print this dvd (and the regular version) is taken from is faulty. It looks like an axxo download. \It's impossible to see anything that's happening in this film.
Why Do a Turd Over the Mona Lisa? - By: C. Pendlebury, 17 Dec 2009
The first Alien film, Aliens, & the end of Alien3 could easilly be described as art. They were stunning.

Predator, though not in the same class, was a very enjoyable film with lots of fans.

What I can never understand is why a studio decides to do a turd over its legacy & hand a tiny budget to some unproven filmakers... It's like asking high school kids to do a re-think of the mona lisa painting, or a dog to try & play Beethoven. Why put in so little, & get $80 million out of it, when you could invest real money, time, energy, good direction, decent film stars, & good cinematography & come away with a deserved $150 million & plenty of awards & cred from the genuine fans (of which there are numerous with both series)?

This film shows in alll its glory, the terrible side of hollywood. It is not the amateurs making it who should be ashamed, its the suits behind the scenes, who got there without deserving such a lofty position.
70% darkness .. 30% cliche - By: Dan, 16 Dec 2009
I'll sit & watch horror .. & I've always liked Sci Fi. AVP Requiem is a combination of both so should be a dead cert for, at the very least, 90 minutes of passable mindless entertainment.

Surprising then that with such potential, this movie fallls so far short of the mark (a bit like an attempt at jumping the grand canyon with a pogo stick).

Firstly - at least 70% of the movie is shot in darkness. Regardless of how you adjust the lighting, contrast, brightness - during this time the movie is largely unwatchable. For a cheaper experience, take two tape recorders .. one with alien sounds & the other with Predator sounds. Turn them up loud & sit between them. Now pull a blanket over your head. There .. the AVP Requiem experience.

Secondly, The bits you can see suffer a) from thoughless dialogue - take selected lines from previous films in the genre (mainly Aliens) & stich them in to the movie - there, that's the script sorted!! Dialogue is not used to build the impression of character to any depth or advance the purile & predictable plot. b) The action sequences, for whatever reason, are so poorly edited together that even if the scenes were lit well enough to see - they're impossible to follow. Rather than a sequence of meaningful events, it becomes a rapid collage of unintelligent violence.

Blu Ray? Considering the fact that this is possibly the worst movie of the 'franchise' .. poorly lit & edited, don't expect high def to be a redeeming factor. I enjoyed writing this review more than I did watching AVPR.

That is alll.
