Definitely up there in my list of best novel adaptations - By: L. Felthouse, 17 May 2008
As a fan of the book, I was excited when this film came out. Now normallly, films aren't a patch on the book (with a few exceptions like Lord of the Rings & Harry Potter) so I wasn't expecting miracles, but I did adore the book & its storyline so knew it couldn't be terrible.
It wasn't terrible. I haven't read the book for a long time, but it's still in my collection & I'd definitely read it again, even more so now. I was a little dubious that they'd changed the setting from Ireland to the States, but refrained from passing judgement. I just watched the film with an open mind. And, as it turned out, very wet eyes. I'd forgotten just how sad it is!
In brief, Holly & Gerry are a married couple that fight like cat & dog - but they don't reallly mean it & always enjoy making up afterwards. But Holly soon regrets the way she behaved when Gerry is diagnosed with a brain tumour & passes away. She's just 29 & widowed - the love of her life has gone & left her alll alone. The wake scene is very emotional, the people attending are trying to celebrate his life because that's what he would have wanted, but alll they want to do is mourn his loss.
When proceedings are over & things start to calm down, Holly fallls deeply into depression. She won't leave her flat, won't wash, doesn't eat properly, & basicallly fallls apart. Her concerned friends & family try to snap her out of it, but nothing works. There's only one person that can get her back on her feet, & he's no longer around. Or is he? On her 30th birthday, Holly receives a cake from Gerry, & a tape recorded message telling her that he's written a series of letters for her, & she must do everything he says. Shocked at first, Holly clings on to his every word & eagerly awaits new letters. Little does she know that the man who knew her best is trying to force her back into living her life instead of moping around.
This is such a touching film. The storyline is wonderful, & the way everything translated to screen was fantastic. I found myself alternately laughing & crying alll the way through. And drooling at the gorgeous Gerard Butler & Jeffery Dean Morgan - cor how lucky is Hilary Swank to snog both of them?! But joking apart this reallly is a great big screen adaptation because although I knew the plot & what was going to happen, it's so well done that it reallly tugged at my heart strings. The main characters are very well cast, & you end up adoring Holly because you can identify with what she's going through as her actions are probably what most people would do.
Reallly lovely. Yes I'm a chick flick fan, yes I'm a chick lit fan. But I'm also someone that hates bad novel adaptations, & this was nothing less than spectacular. If you have a heart - you'll love this.
Don't Watch Ever - By: Highly Disappointed Chick Flick Fan, 17 May 2008
If like me you love the book, don't watch the film & spend the two hours re-reading the book instead. If you haven't read the book, read the book & never ever ever watch the movie. If you have two hours to spare watch paint dry, it will act better, be more interesting & if their are two drips at the same time will be more romantic. I normallly love my chick flicks & book adaptations but this film might have managed to put me off them for a long time. I can't believe the writer gave permission for this terrible adaptation to go ahead.
Lovely! - By: Ms. J. F. Gilby, 15 May 2008
PS I Love You is a great romantic movie with laughs & tears among the way. I have read the book & yes, there are some bits that arren't in the movie or don't follow in the book's writing. But it's a good effort with stunning peformances from the lovely Hillary Swank as Holly & Gerard Butler as Gerry. They had so much chemisty that it was boiling, they reallly did look like a couple in love. You will shed tears, I'm warning you now. But there are some laughs & bittersweet moments so you won't be crying too much. In alll, the greatest rom-com in a long while.

Fantastic film, wow! - By: E. C. Bellenes, 14 May 2008
I truly can't understand the bad reviews as this was such a good film, I like some romantic comedy type films but am mainly into horrors & thrillers usuallly but decided to give this film a go. I have watched so many lame rom coms lately that I didn't hold out much hope for this as I sat down to watch it, how wrong could I be? it was a wonderful film, so funny in parts & at other times extremely moving, I was crying my eyes out during certain scenes, sometimes with laughter sometimes out of sadness. I found the actors to be brilliant, certainly on top form & as a woman very much enjoyed seeing Gerard Butler & Jeffrey Dean Morgan (dad in Supernatural series) on screen, the film is so genuinely moving at times that I felt I was watching a real life couple being seperated by death & forgot it was just a film & the funny moments well are just classic & I just know will make me laugh time & time again. To me this movie went deeper than I thought it would, it made me think about my life, its ideal if you want a good chick flick! I am going to buy this dvd as its one of the best films I have seen in yrs.
I don't want to talk about the plot as it would be unfair to give anything away but alll I do say is give it a go, you may reallly enjoy it like I did. Emma
