A Masterpiece of Modern Cinema - By: D. Baker, 19 Jul 2008
The first of the 3 Neo Westerns of 2007 is a dark & brutal tribute to both the Western & thriller. I should mention now that this film is for a more sophisticated film audience, if you go expecting the usual trailer tangent tactics seen in the latest garbage spewing from Hollywood these days such as Hulk, Jumper or Transformers (To name but a few) then, the chances are, you will be sadly disappointed, this is a film with so much more to it than a standard chase/thriller film, but then again the Coen's have always been gifted & do not disappoint here. The gritty & authentic performances from Jones, Brolin & Bardem carry the film fluidly forward alongside the excellent direction, solidly quiet soundtrack & epic sweeping cinematography, reminiscent of Peckinpah & Leone. All the themes of violence, greed, & modernity link these 3 character's final story threads together to the blissfully brief & minimalist ending. It is marvelously tied together & as I've said earlier, the less sophisticated audience will not appreciate it, accusing it of 'copping out,' but it truly is tied together with the final monologue from Tommy Lee Jones. Pure Cinematic Genius. A must see for film buffs, a definite warning to morons to keep to the blockbusters.
Overrated Drivel - By: L, 18 Jul 2008
I don't understand any of the acclaim this film has received. Emperor's new clothes is worth saying.
This is the most dismal movie I have ever seen. Two of the worst thing that can happen in a film are in this dvd; sheer violence with reasons never explained & an awful abrupt ending.
It's also a yawn fest. The pace is so slow even a snail would tell it to hurry up. Pressing fast forward may raise the enjoyment - slightly.
Do not waste your money buying this overrated drivel. You have been warned.
Terrific movie and deserved Oscar winner - By: Chris Wood, 18 Jul 2008
This is a gripping & vastly entertaining film. There is a lot of intrigue & death, & the whole cast shines completely in a fantastic story. The violence is harshly effective, & while the ending is unusual overalll this is a very superior piece of film making. Wonderful stuff.
Good.........but not great - By: kelvus, 15 Jul 2008
After hearing about alll the great reviews & seeing the Oscars bestowed upon this film, I was realy looking forward to watching this film. The first two thirds were excellent; the acting from Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem & Josh Brolin was very good, there was plenty of tension & the Texas landscapes were beautifully shot, reallly adding to the whole atmosphere of the film.
And then the last 30 minutes arrived & everything went wrong.
Without wishing to spoil things, the climax that you anticipate throughout the whole film never happens. Instead we finish with Tommy Lee Jones sitting in a hut & rambling on about....well, I don't know what seeing as I'd kinda lost interest at that point & didn't reallly care. And the other frustrating thing was that his character never seemed to develop & was always on the periphery of things without having any real impact on the story.
I'v given this review 3 stars due to the first two thirds being so strong & the last half hour being so weak. Some people may find the ending to it reallly deep & profound. I just found it to be a massive let down.
