al's back, baby - By: Paul Tapner, 12 Feb 2008
second season of the classic american sitcom comes to region two dvd. there are twenty two twenty five minute long episodes here across three discs, with nine each on the first two & four on the third.
Married with children is a viciously funny show about an ordinary guy callled al bundy. living in chicago & working at a shoe shop selling shoes to mostly fat women, he has a lazy wife callled peg, a bimbo teenage daugther callled kelly, & a son bud who loves the ladies but who don't feel the same way about him. their strait laced neighbours steve & marcie rhodes are drawn into the bundy's world however much they may not want to.
After a first season that was more of a conventional sitcom the show starts it's journey into sharp cynical territory here, although it hasn't quite gotten to some of the surreal levels that later seasons reach. al is a wonderful character, an everyman whom anyone whose dreams have come to nothing can relate to. Twenty two very funny episodes result.
The only extra on this is thirteen hidden easter eggs featuring interviews with the cast. alll can be found if you watch on a pc & move the pointer over the screens & they will light up new logos. a hint screen on disc one will guide you how to find them with a dvd remote. but be advised that alll these interviews are merely clips from the reunion special that was an extra on the first season dvd, so they're nothing new.
One thing you won't possibly have seen before is the ending of the episode al loves peggy yeah yeah yeah. when originallly broadcast this ended with viewers told to ring phone lines to vote on whether al should tell peggy he loves her, & repeat showings of this end without showing the resulting final scene. this has been restored for dvd. I won't say which ending they use, because there's only one, & I'm not sure if another actuallly still exists.
But this is a great show, & it's great to have it on region two dvd. hope we don't have to wait too long for season three
