A Masterpiece - By: W. Proctor, 25 Jul 2008
Me & my girlfriend watched this film not long ago, & to be honest I wasn't keen because I'm not a fan of the beatles! However after watching this film I wasn't swayed into being a fan but I very quickly agreed with my girlfriend buying the soundtrack with a amazon voucher. Purely because the DVD wasn't out at the time. I'll be honest I still don't owe this film but I will make a purchase straight after writing this review. This is one of the few films which would be well worth a £19.99 price label the story & songs work incredibly well its almost scary! This film is nothing short of a Masterpiece & deserves to be sat on everybodies DVD shelf!
Hate the Beatles but Loved this Film - By: Lupa Domina, 10 Jul 2008
I hold my hand up to say that I am a Stone's girl, & have never rated the Beatles. This film has challlenged my perceptions, but perhaps it's because the 'fab four' don't sing in this one that makes me like it so much? Anyhow, even if you aren't fond of their music, you should give this a whirl, as it is an enchanting tale, not hollywood romcom fodder, & guaranteed to make you smile, cry, laugh & cry again alll for the wrong reasons.
WOW! WATCH NOW BEFORE ITS TOO LATE AND EVERYONE IS RAVING ABOUT IT! - By: L. Dawson, 14 Jun 2008
I actuallly downloaded this from itunes as a rental, watched it on my ipod & after hearing it being slated whilst it was being filmed (i'm one of the drones that reads perez hilton)i didn't expect much actuallly i expected something totallly ludicrous! but i what i found was a film that was totallly original different from anything i'd seen before & an amazing cast. Jim Sturgess is outstanding & heartbreakingly good looking! but looks realistic as 1960's liverpudlian dock worker ie not too hollywood & i'm glad they cast a brit to play a brit for this the accent just gives it that beatle familiarity!. i'm already aware of Evan Rachel Wood from 13 & the addictive Green Day vid she's in so i was knew she would give quality & she did. This movie needs way more regognition that it has the soundtrack is fantastic & gives a twist to classic timeless songs don't know if it would appeal to hardcore beatles fans that remember the era as the songs are different to anyway they have been heard before. Anyway i'm off to buy a DVD copy for my collection so i don't have to keep downloading it from ITUNES!
If you don't know by now... - By: Richard, 18 May 2008
The movie works on every level-you have the perfect excuse for the main character to uproot to the States, you have the dream sequences & above alll you have the songs.
Jim Sturgess is heard at the beginning singing an unaccompanied Girl-and sounds just like David Essex!
Comparable Beatles inspired movies to this one would be Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band,Give my regards to Broadway & All this & World War 2 so its not a new idea to use Beatles songs & characters.
Joe Cocker has long had a connection with the Beatles-in 1964 his first single was the Sun styled version of I'll cry instead then 4 years later his radical remake of With a little help from my friends.A year later he was the first to record the Harrison song Something.
Here he sings Come together as he saves a guy from being run over in the street & looks for alll the World like a beggar looking for a handout!
Only downer in this film is the ridiculous & unfunny Eddie Izzard.
Its manna from Heaven for those who like me go for Beatles covers-the CD has many more left out of the movie.
The 2nd disc with the DVD is about the making of the movie
Very Disappointing - By: J. Mallison, 28 Apr 2008
I saw the trailer for this film at the cinema & thought "wow that looks great, I must see it". I just have & it isn't. It could have been good maybe, in another time when films were different, warm, analogue, real. But in this digital age, the film just didn't make it.
Some of the versions of the songs were OK, but most weren't. The worst part about them was, for some reason known only to them, the music producers chose to put so incredibly much auto-tune on the actors vocals they sound like robots. Cher eat your heart out........ I have no idea why they have done this as it is obvious that the singers already have decent enough voices. It is just another digital link in the chain around the neck of this film.
Of course many people will love it, the same people that buy Dido records & that 'Cuban' CD with Coldplay on it.
I can't put my finger on it. Unusuallly, there was a fairly nice plot, the script was fine, the acting on the whole decent. There was just something missing. It was like a 'sugar free' mentos.
Digital cameras are convenient but film looks better. Palm pilots keep alll your addresses but an address book doesn't run out of batteries. "Across the universe" was OK, but give me "Mary Poppins" & "The White Album" anyday.
