Not my cup of tea! - By: S. Mcneelance, 26 Oct 2008
I find myself in total agreement with the comments of the first writer above. I too have read & bought the Dee Brown book many times & for the same reasons quoted above.
I did think, at last, something good to watch other than the usual fairy tale stories about this period of time in American history, but it was not so. Along with, & because of the gross misrepresentation of facts throughout the film, I have to say give this one a miss & save yourselves some money.
If you want a modern day western to add to your collection, go ahead & buy it, thats alll it appears to be (and quite a bad one at that).
Powerful - By: D.L, 16 May 2008
I enjoyed this. It's a powerful & thought provoking piece. It's well made & has a great group of actors playing smalll parts in a big picture. August Schellenberg is brilliant & for me a superb turn by Wes Studi.
According to others it's not completely historicallly accurate nor a true representation of the book. But I'm sure anyone like me wishing to dip their toe into this period will been given an insight into these events by watching this dvd. It's a great piece of informative entertainment & should be viewed as such. Adios.
Wounded Knee hardly get s a look in! Get the book instead! - By: C. D. McBride, 13 Apr 2008
I was hugely disappointed with this film. I've read the book many years ago & have recommended it to everyone I know. I've had to rebuy the book many times, as I've foolishly lent it out & never got it back. As for the movie, I cannot see the link with the book. It is also totallly inaccurate. The movie starts with US cavalry attacking the camp site - they never made it that far at Big Horn, didn't even make it across the river. Eastman was never at it. He wasn't even Dawes right hand man. Sitting Bull never lashed his men. He also surrendered at Ft. Buford & not at Standing Rock. My biggest disappointment was that the Massacre of Wounded Knee was like an afterthought, as if the director finished filming & thought 'Ooops, we forgot Wounded Knee!' Nearly forgot to mention that the movie also gives you the impression that Sitting Bull died on the same day as the Wounded Knee Massacre. Sitting Bull was killed Dec 15 & the massacre occured 2 weeks later on the 29th.
Fantastic - By: C. West, 29 Mar 2008
I brought the Region 1 dvd, thinking this would never be available in England, back in october 2007 after readind Dee Browns book.
Yes, it does create a slightly fictional story but it is fantastic viewing, regardless of the director being canadian. im suprised the previous commenter didnt note the fact it was filmed in Canada aswell.
as far as i am concerned fantastic viewing, my favourite alongside Into the West, also fantastic.
If your native, don't waste your money on this - just for white folks only - By: Daniel Redthunder, 19 Mar 2008
Firstly as a filmmaker & secondly as a Oglala Lakota/Northern Cheyenne human being from Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge rez with a family background that goes way back, I watched 'Bury My Heart' today with some trepidation & reallly couldn't believe my ears & my eyes.
Why would HBO get a guy from Canada to direct this US plains film, I will never know. His attempt at understanding a native worldview illustrates his ignorance & lack of depth. Shame that just when we as native people need more of our stories seen in mainstream media we get stuff like this.
I would love to direct this myself. Watch out for my documentary 'Coloring the Media'
Bad directing, bad dialogue & waste of great talent by a terrible director. My advice stay on that side of the border when dealing with stories that you don't reallly understand - better still use a Native Director. C'mon HBO get to grips with the 21st century.
