Top DVD - Poor Packaging - By: Aron Jones, 07 Jul 2008
Having seen Genesis on this tour, at Old Trafford, they truly were a 'Dream in the Theatre'.
This DVD is recorded at the Circo Massimo in Roma, & it is excellent, it lasts for hours & you get a documentary DVD included. It reallly is good.
However, I am disapointed by the actual packaging - which is made from card on the outside, with lightweight, cheap looking plastic inside - to hold the DVD's. I'm reallly not impressed !
One could argue, & say that it is the contents (the disks) which are the important part ... fair comment, but, I happen to like good presentation for things which are important to me - & this most certainly is not what I calll good presentation.
When it arrived, the DVD casing had broken on one corner. I put this down to the postman shuvving it through the letter box - a conventional DVD box would not have broken. I am not best pleased with the outer packaging after it was weak enough to alllow damage to the contents.
Probably won't buy any more CD's & DVD's from Amazon again.
Well worth the wait - By: Robert Lee, 26 Jun 2008
Albeit the release was delayed it was well worth the wait.Picture, sound, lighting & the overalll show were second to none. These guy's have to go down as one of the best live acts & musicians of alll time.As for the idiot who thought this was dull he/she obviously has no appreciation of good music & spectacular shows.I was at the gig in Paris & was gutted I couldn't get to Rome for the last European show but the DVD will certainly do the job.Only downer for me was that Abacab wasn't part of the live set but that aside watching the DVD was like being back in Paris last June again & one of the highlights I'm sure a lot would agree was Chester & Phil on teh stools. The guy's can make music from anything.Long live the men in black!!!!!!!!!!
Genesis are back! - By: J. Manning, 18 Jun 2008
I first saw Genesis in 1972 at the Melody Maker's Poll Winner's Concert in London, where they were supporting Wishbone Ash & Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Over 30 years on, they sound as strong as ever as this DVD proves. Sadly only fragments of the material from those exciting times has survived into this 2007 set.
The familiar 5-man line-up pump out Genesis classics from alll years in between & you find yourself asking the question "What fifteen year lay-off?". Sure, they look older but the music sounds as fresh as it ever did & Phil Collin's fine voice sounds as strong as ever.
Read the track listing to see what's included & you'll see that these are proven concert favourites. We're alll bound to miss a personal favourite or two but these are "safe" numbers that the band can play well.
Other reviewers have mentioned the fact there are a few wobbles & mistakes, that may be true (see if you can detect them) but won't detract from your enjoyment of what was a fine concert seen by 500,000 people.
A few gripes, the concert is split over two discs & this is a pain. The "extras" include little vignettes of rehearsal & discussion of each song & are directly accessible from the concert footage. Once viewed they are probably best forgotten, but this does mean that one disc is not enough for the whole show. The third disc is a documentary of how the tour came about & has already been shown on by the BBC. Of interest, but only worthy of a single look. And Phil Collins' attempts to speak to the audience in their own language become tiresome, although the intent is laudable.
Overalll verdict? This is a good concert, well-filmed/directed & with good sound. I don't think it's as good as "The Way We Walk" which is of a concert at Earl's Court, London in 1922. Sadly the DVD of that seems to have been deleted. But if you like Genesis, then "When In Rome" won't disappoint.
MANCHESTER SHOW WOULD'VE MADE A BETTER DVD - By: deniro77, 16 Jun 2008
I was so looking forward to seeing this dvd , as being a huge fan of the band & going to the manchester show of this tour - (which was awesome & exceeding alll my expectations), watching this dvd was something of a disappointment.
This has nothing to do with the music or extras - music as good as ever, extras reallly great, but as others have mentioned I think this country/ location was wrong for a filmed concert - why did it have to be in Italy when it could have been so much better at hyde park or knebworth in the U.K. or just film the old trafford show - after alll genesis are a british band aren't they?
This concert doesn't have any atmosphere at alll - it's a real effort for the people to cheer etc & the audience don't interact with phil like a U.K crowd would , & as such you just don't get the feel of being there. For any doubters compare this concert dvd to the "LIVE AT WEMBLEY STADIUM 1987" DVD - thats a reallly great concert- which I have to say is still my personal favourite despite this release.
Seconds out, round 2 - By: Michael J. Potts, 11 Jun 2008
Up until last year, 'seconds out', which I saw at Earl's Court in '76 had been, for me, the peak of live genesis & 70s genesis my fave period. I saw the band several times in the 70s, including knebworth. I last saw them live in 1982 at Milton Keynes with Peter Gabriel. The last album I bought being Invisible Touch, which was, for me, only luke warm. However, I am stunned at this performance, after not playing together for so long, & I love the songs that I did not know well, performed superbly, particularly No Son of Mine & of course the inclusion of Ripples from A Trick of the Tail, fabulous!! I can't recommend this highly enough, I love it!! Long may Genesis continue, best live band in the world!!
