The COMPLETE Davros! - By: Philip Quinton, 16 Jul 2008
The first thing I need to get out of the way is the understandable resentment a lot of fans (including myself) feel about having to buy a boxed set of stuff just for a few exclusive extras & a special edition. I reallly just wanted this for the Remembrance of the Daleks Special Edition & had already resigned myself to waiting a few years for it to come out separately. (All fans have this choice & I am not going to let this affect my grade of the product in question.)
Until somebody on the Doctor Who Restoration Team website pointed out that the Big Finish website (Big Finish are the company who produce alll the Doctor Who audio adventures & spinoffs) were selling the Davros Collection at a huge 60% discount. So I took a deep breath & ordered my copy.
The way I saw it, I didn't yet have "Destiny of the Daleks" on DVD & I didn't have any of the Davros Big Finish audios so what I paid was a good price to get alll of these together. Add to that the newly remastered/remixed version of "Remembrance of the Daleks", the interesting new "Davros Connections" documentary (which links the chronology of the TV stories with the Big Finish audios) & the exclusive audio adventure "The Davros Mission" then I am looking at some great bonus material. The fact that I now also have two copies of alll of the other Davros TV stories on DVD means that I can consider keeping the old Davros DVDs as backup copies or else I can flog them on eBay & make at least half of my money back!
Looking at the product itself it is a thing of beauty & the content has been very lovingly restored. The documentary features for the TV stories are alll very interesting in their individual ways. But the thing I loved most about this set was that you could listen to the audio adventures & watch the TV stories in the order of Davros's own timeline & build up a picture of the development of the character. The imaginative audio mini-series "I, Davros" takes you through Davros's childhood, his formative years & his life before the Daleks introducing alll the people & events in the man's life that shaped him into the figure we first met in Genesis of the Daleks. In addition to this we have the generous inclusion of the previously released Big Finish Davros audios (starring Colin Baker & Paul McGann) to fill in the gaps between the classic series stories & the new exclusive audio to help bridge the gap between the classic series & the time war of the new series.
This is a beautiful set to own & I am glad that I took the plunge. I'm reallly enjoying it.
Beware - By: S. Gunn, 27 Apr 2008
Part of the reason I purchased this boxset was due to the audio drama's included, but when I went to listen to them I realised that they can only be heard through a dvd player/tv & not a normal CD player. They did not advertise which format the audio plays would be in so beware!!
Not for all - By: Langella, 20 Jan 2008
I'm reallly not impressed by the Beeb's output lately. This issue especiallly reeks of exploiting fans new & old. It might have been worth it if they bothered to update alll the ropey model work on 'Rememberance' with CGI but they don't seem to have been bothered. This new FX aspect is used so randomly & is simply shabby treatment of joe public. If they can do it for ALL the classic series of Star Trek.......
Highs and lows - By: Plastic Zombie, 29 Dec 2007
This is probably my favourite Doctor Who boxset release to date despite the fact that some of the stories let the side down. On one side we have the 5 star Genesis Of The Daleks; a candidate for best TV sci-fi story ever made, on the other; the awful Destiny Of The Daleks. The DVD extras are mighty fine but the audio plays are alll just terrible (though they do have Classic Who actors returning to provide voices) & I simply cannot fathom why, for something with a RRP of £99, the box is so flimsy.
Don't encourage them! - By: D. Baker, 23 Nov 2007
Bringing together previously released material, adding a single exclusive audio play & special features disc on Remembrance, is reallly not fair on the fans who have purchased said previous releases.
