First, thanks for the helpful reviews. Nevertheless it took me several rethinks before committing mysekf to this purchase. Here is what I have found...
1. Box as shown has (cheap) 3-D plastic stargate on box.
2. The whole box lifts off the base which contains 2 large heavy duty slightly glossy cardboard books plus the episode book.
3. Each large book is about 50-60mm thick. Open out the 'pages'. Each page has 3 thick card board slots. Each page has up to 3 DVDs, one in each slot.
4. There is one extra features DVD at the end of the last 'book'.
5. The episode book is a glossy production.
Taking hints from previous reviews I did the following on receipt:
I printed out Wikipedia list of episodes & compared them to the episode book. All the episodes are there in the episode book. Note Episode 1 is in fact 2 episodes. It will be easier to see this on the Wiki list. The first 2 colums are relevant - a straight forward 1-## for each series & the 2nd colum has film numbers 3 digits long. So episode 1 series 1 is 1 & 2 in the first colum & 101a & 101b in the second column. I use the Wiki list as prime reference instead of the enclosed book even though no episodes are missing from that book. They are alll on the right disks as well.
1969 & Thors Hammer are duplicated at the end of Volume 7 disk.
I then visuallly checked each disk. A few had 'scuff' marks & only one had what looked like a scratch across most of the disk. I tried this by skipping through the chapters - no problems.
I bought a CD / DVD hanging filing box from Tesco Extra with extra pockets. I have now removed alll DVDs from the original packaging & keep them in these soft protected hangers. The previous advice about better storage is well worth heeding.
Disc numbering:
I have used abbreviations (D = Disk, V=Volume, S=Season)
The first 5 disks (D1- D5)
From then on alll disks are V2-V54)
V9 & V10 also have Season (S9V9-S10V10)
Reme,ber V7 has 2 duplicated episodes.
Also the order on the disks is not always the same as the Wiki list which based on viewing order. There variations of viewing on the set are mixture of US & British viewing orders. Again I rely on Wiki list.
Different orders appear at V4, V5.
Some episodes are combined: D1 ep1, V37, V38, S9V46.
So far I have reached mid season 3 & no problems whatsoever.
Total box much smalller than Babylon 5 Universe, but still think the DVD cases of latter far superior to the cardboard packing of Stargate SG1. Also note that if you choose to retain use of cardboard then it it very difficult not to rub one DVD against another when removing / replacing disks into slots. I suppose that could cause scratches long term - not sure. I'm not taking the risk.
Hope this reassures people that its worth buying.
One last thing the box set contains no full length films. I ran into this problem with B5 & ordered duplicate films. Fortunately Amazon alllowed return of these.
I'm guessing that there has been some improvement in the packaging from earliest release of the set???

Great Set - Great Errors - By: B. J. Davies, 21 Feb 2008 Brilliant series, brilliant box set at a brilliant price but there are drawbacks to this lot, some of which cannot be overcome by skipping this & getting the previously released sets as they are one & the same.
1. The order of the disks is a little difficult to follow so I suggest that when you get this set make sure you don't mix them up, or do make a dedicated set of custom DVD cases to hold each season. This is what I have done.
2. The folders that these disks are stored in does not do much to secure them well & some of the disks will be marked (not scratched) on the playing side when you get them, & the reason for the custom cases. I must say thought hat alll mime played perfectly.
3. Do not rely on the booklet, a lot of the episodes are apparently missing (even though they are not) & are also in the incorrect order when compared to the actual disks.
4. Worse of alll, some episodes reallly are in the incorrect order on season 2, 4 & 8, including "Gemnini" & "Prometheus Unbound" which is referenced in Gemini - these are not only in the wrong order, but are on different disks - a real nuisance.
All that said, the set is still worth having as unless you buy a region one set this is the best you will be able to do as there are basicallly the original released individual sets packed into one box. It is better than not having them at alll.

Great set. But Lousy service from Amazon, i have ordered, returned, recievd a replacement, & returned my replacement for a refund due to receiveing defective disks. when refunded Amazon had both box sets back but didn't procces either i had to chace up why my refund wasn't forthcomming & eventuallly got it back.
I took a chance & reordered the set fresh, only to find that the same fault - episodes unplayable - is happening on on disk in every season. is thos a production or ackaging problem. i have no returned for a refund & will be ordering from Play.com when it becomes available there.
The set that could have been perfect - By: Andrew W. M. Perry, 06 Feb 2008 There's a great deal to like about this set. The huge, chunky box full of discs. The feeling when you start opening one of the binders of discs, & it just keeps unfolding & unfolding & unfolding, & then you remember that there's *another* one still in the box. The huge amount of special features, commentaries & extras. And, of course, the fact that it contains over eight *thousand* minutes of arguably one of the best sci-fi shows of alll time.
But then things start to go wrong. It's little things mostly, like the absence of subtitles on the early seasons, & the fact that the packaging is, after the initial awe passes, distinctly underwhelming. The discs are basicallly just alll the series boxed sets in new packaging, so it's alll there, just not as solidly packaged as it could have been. A more cohesive design on the discs & menus would have been nice too, but it doesn't reallly affect my enjoyment of the discs.
The one major annoyance is the fact that the disc numbering is off. Instead of just marking them "Season one, disc one", they've chosen a curious mixture of "volume 54" & "season three, volume five" & alll sorts of other variations. Unless you're watching the discs in sequence it makes it very difficult & tedious to find the right episode - particularly as the later discs have those interminable "You Wouldn't Steal A Car" anti-piracy videos play, unskippable, before getting to the episode listing.
Oh, & just to make things more annoying, the brochure that accompanies the set doesn't match the disc numbers. You look up an episode, count out the disc number (because the brochure uses "season/disc" format), find the disc - & find that the corresponding disc is actuallly three discs on. And the special features are rarely on the disc the brochure says they're on.
All in alll, it's a set that's easy to find fault with, but I suspect most people will quickly make a note of which discs contain their favourite features anyway. The faults are many & annoying, but minor - it's still every episode of a great show, with overalll very nice transfers to DVD. So if you can stand the annoyance - of course you can, though let me know if MGM decide to retool the set - it's a box well worth getting.

the reason why the disks are number weirdly at the start is due to when it was first released on DVD they did disk 1 with the season 1 opener & the end episode on the same disk with another episode on there for good measure. so when season 2 was released with alll the episodes it started of from disk 2. after that the whole of the first season was released & thats what messed the numbering up.
