so-so - By: P. Davie, 15 May 2008
I have long been quite a fan of The Simpsons - mainly because of its layered approach to comedy - ranging from slapstick & sight gags to some very clever wordplay. Many episodes also have quite an unexpected poignancy to them, too.
So what would 1 1/2 hours bring us? How would the writers dazzle us? Well, it would seem, the biggest joke is the one that comes at the very start of the film - why go to the flicks to see something when you could watch it at home for free? And I don't (and I don't think the writers did either) mean that flippantly. Some people have endlessly complained about the fact that there is very little new on offer here - & they'd be right. The plot is nothing new at alll - almost a re-run of the garbage man episode, in fact. But why? Well, presumably because they were also writng stuff for you to watch, for free, at home. Every week. For the past 20 years.
So - it's nothing new. Is it funny? Many people thought so - I didn't. Mainly because alll the gags were either visual or slapstick - very few language-related gags cropped up at alll. Oh - & the slapstick is signposted for at least 10 seconds before something happens. So you snigger in anticipation......and then what you expect happens......so you just snigger. Very few belly laughs.
And one more thing. Spiderpig? Hilarious? Gimme a break! I fear a case of The Emperor's new clothes on an unprecedented & international scale.
So why 3 stars? Cos its entertaining in places & not a truly awful way to spend a bit of time.
The sad thing is that the South Park crew did so much better with Bigger, Longer & Uncut.
Not as good as Mr Plow, but what is? - By: S. Bentley, 26 Apr 2008
After several recent seasons of nearly laugh-free Simpsons where the lead voice artists deathlessly intone non-sequiturs, I reallly thought that it was time the show was put out of its misery. And then, we get the movie, & it's reallly quite nice. The writers seem to have remembered that the characters have to be sympathetic & relatable, so that we actuallly see them showing personality traits beyond being ridiculously glib about everything & hideously selfish. The film finallly puts the family back in the Simpsons.
And it is reallly funny. The stuff with the pig is good, but the opening with Bart & Homer on the roof & Bart's nudie skateboard run sets a good pace. And the animation is reallly good, so that they do feel like the whole thing is being expanded for the big screen & makes good use of the longer running time & wider screen size.
Some people keep saying it's just like an extended series episode. Well yeah, what were you expecting? The good news is that it's an extended series episode from when the series was worth watching.
Really good - By: Mrs. C. B. Tobin, 15 Apr 2008
Very funny. I LOVED IT!!! I burst out laughing at most of it. I love Spider Pig. Homer finds a pig at a food restrant & names it Spider pig, of cause animal's do have droppings & homer puts it in a metle thing & dumps it in a lake & thing get extreamly bad. I would of gave it 5 stars but sadly my family think that the film hasn't got the other characters in it as much as the seris do, but it's callled the SIMPSONS for a reason. ***** for me but my family says put ****. Thank u =]
They couldn't even make the very first movie original - By: BigJeff, 14 Apr 2008
The very first Simpsons movie. It's apparently two decades in the making & many people waited desperatly for it to be released after it was announced.
So why couldn't they make the first ever big screen Simpsons as eic as it should have been?
There's some good jokes in there, but that's about alll that's good about the film.
First thing is they spent too much of the movie introducing new characters instead of using old ones, Mr Burns was barely in it, Sideshow Bob & Patty & Selma not in it at alll. Instead they replaced them with new characters & watsed time giving them stories. Barely any of the people from Springfield were in the film, just the Simpsons. And the Springfield people make the show.
Second, is the plots annd sub plots. Homer does something very stupid while hurting himself repeatedly, Marge has doubts about their relationship & takes some time to herself, Lisa tries to get people to care about an issue she believes in & Bart acts out.
Absolutely nothing new there then.
The last thing is the DVD. All the seasons on DVD have been packed with deleted scenes & commentaries on every episode. Creators have said about the film that they've had to cut many scenes, characters & ideas from the movie, but alll the features are just a couple of deleted scenes & some commentaries.
Maybe it was hyped up so much after being on TV for so long, maybe people will just never be happy with a Simpsons movie, but still, it's just bad. Get the TV show instead.
One lst thing, Spider Pig. For some reason, people are obsessed with it & think it's hilarious & comedy gold. What's funny about changing the words from Spiderman but using the word pig? If that's comedy genius then I wonder what people are callling Fawlty Towers.
Great but... - By: Kathryn D. Mckay, 13 Apr 2008
I love this film, & so will you if you have watched any of The Simpsons seasons, it should be worth 5 stars, I shouldnt have to be writing that it's not worthy of full marks, but the film is definately worth buying.
BTW - Funny scene Ned Flanders Hot Chocolate Scene.
