In alll honesty, unlike a lot of other reviewers,I didnt know that this was based on any books.
I liked the film though :)
Some of it was a little confusing, but alll in alll, beautifully animated & one I will watch again.
Its not terrible, i mean i quite enjoyed it - By: A Mod, 14 Jun 2008
I havnt read the book but ive watched nearly alll of Studio Ghibli collection, i just wacthed this online & it wasnt terrible. The Animation was amazing in my opinion & the landscapes were beautiful, apart from that the i didint know what was going on about half way through. I didnt see the plot clearly & it seemed like this was like a second part or something or other. But alll in alll it was worth watching, but i wont be buying to watch it, just to add it to an amazing collecion of films
Not the best - By: D. McCallum, 05 Jun 2008
I reallly enjoy the Studio Ghibli films for their rich animation & fun stories.
This had some of the aspects I have come to expect, but it is not the best I have seen.
Being new to the Earthsea world, I felt the story seemed to be a bit rushed at the beginning - but also there were a lot of slow moving parts later on in the film which didn't seem to add much. Despite this, there were some beautifully animated moments.
Definitely worth a watch if you are a Studio Ghibli fan.
Tales From Earthsea - By: Book Worm, 01 May 2008
This is the lowest star rating i've ever given a Ghibli film & it's such a shame as I was expecting so much. The actual animation is up to the high standard of most of the output from the studio. You get the lush backgrounds & detailed rendering Ghibli is renowned for, but sadly it's not too original. The characters look like those from Nausicaa & this film uses the black goopy effect widely used in 'Spirited Away' & 'Howls Moving Castle', you'll know what I mean if you've seen these films. The music has a celtic, almost medieval, feel to it & roots the film firmly in that period of history, especiallly with alll the talk of wizards & the evil wizards castle. The story was disjointed & pretty incoherent at times & leaves you feeling unsatisfied at the end (hence the 3 stars). It is a long film, with not much substance. This film could've delivered so much more, but it was unoriginal & laboured, which is a great shame coming from such a renowned studio, & a studio, incidentallly, I've loved every other film from. Worth a viewing if you're a fan of Ghibli or Anime, but you could miss it & not lose any sleep over it.
The magic was missing.. - By: Rosemary Harris, 27 Apr 2008
This is an incredibly well animated film, just what you'd expect from Ghibli, but it just did not hold the same magic that most Ghibli films has done. I felt it was quite western in its storyline which may have something to do with it. The first Ghibli I saw was Princess Monoke, shortly followed by Spirited Away, & I was enchanted from the very start. I've seen several more & loved them alll, but I just wasn't taken with this one. 3 stars for the usual quality but I probably won't watch it again.
