Tongue-in-cheek blockbuster - By: T. E. A., 20 Dec 2009
This is not your average sci-fi action flick. Once again Verhoeven embraces alll the stereotypes of the genre (deadly aliens, candid heroes, overblown action scenes, stupid romantic subplot), adds cartoonish exaggeration in pretty much every scene, to come up with an unsubtle, yet enjoyable parody. This is Full Metal Jacket meets Zoolander, on steroids. If you're not immune to sarcasm, you could very well find yourself praying for alll those stupid human soldiers/models (and not the other way around) to be wiped out the face of the galaxy.

BUGS ON BLU RAY!! - By: Jason Thorne, 28 Sep 2009
I can remember watching this when it first released back in 1997 & I enjoyed it then so I purchased it on blu ray. Taking into the account this is what they calll a older film the blu ray transfer is very very good. The picture is nice & sharp with some good sound so it alll adds up to sci-fi classic which is as good now as back in 97. If you haven't seen this you reallly are missing a treat which has plenty of blood & gore & bugs! For me I think this is better than Total Recalll & Running Man but that's personal opinion but this is a worthy purchase for your blu ray collection.
Read the book - By: Mole, 10 Jun 2009
I first read the book back at the end of the 60's. From various reviews I read of it at the time, it was clear that many people didn't actuallly understand the message that Heinlein was trying to put across. It was not a satire, nor was it glorifying war - instead it was trying to get people to think about what is to accept the burden of responsibility within a society.

This film is based upon the book, but deviates from it in a number of key areas. The director was no doubt influenced by the stories of the second world war & the occupation of his home country - the uniforms are clearly based upon the Nazi style & the Federation eagle emblem bears more than a passing resemblence to the stylised German eagle.

The CGI is extremely well done & I cannot fault it. However, there is a obvious link between the appearance of the bugs as they swarm & the way that troopers cover the ground in several key scenes - clearly there is a message that the director wants to compare the behaviour of the two.

In many ways, the director actuallly does hit the point that Heinlein tried to make; although it would have been better if the father had joined up as well as in the book. This would have made it much better in my opinion.

Read the book, watch the film, think about the issues. Do you have what it takes to be a citizen?
Top quality sci fi with satire - By: P. G. Newman, 04 Jun 2009
Forget the other 'S.T' films which don't live up to the original at alll. This is one of my favourite alll time sci fi because the action & effects are good & then suddenly you realise the satire has just booted in with a vengeance, not to be missed if you like this genre
