This Rocks! - By: Wendy, 16 Sep 2005
I am the biggest Elvis fan EVER! And anyone who doesn't appreciate this film, is clearly nuts! This film is truly amazing, & once AGAIN demonstrates the true wonder of the talent of Elvis. It's a shame there's no sequal!
Funny slapstick; good songs - By: bobs, 09 Feb 2004
Alright, alright, he should not have done it. He should not have done at least half of his features. But let's accept the fact that his success in music led to Hollywood contracts for *formula* pictures. Most major stars made some or many "assembly line" productions.
This one was different. Although it's been reported that Big El had to be practicallly dragged on to the set, he rises to the occasion & delivers a strong performance. By 1965, he was relaxed in front of the camera, & his timing is perfect. Granted, some of the material is ancient, but there are many scenes in which he manages to poke fun at his own screen personae! One very good bit involves Elvis arriving at some smalll town watering hole to learn that the guy who was to hold a job for him beat it out of town. When Elvis ponders his next step, the bartender hands him a guitar, & Presley's response is priceless. In another scene, Elvis & his lady boss embrace. The dialogue is obvious & he looks right into the camera.
There are plenty of "adult" situations in this flick & some are not in the best taste when we presume that this is intended for a family audience. But, mysteriously, they're actuallly funny.
Fans have complained about the soundtrack drawn from Elvis albums. (In fact, one originated as a "Bonus" on a *film soundtrack*!). But most have overdubs (dig the horn section added to "Long, Lonely Highway") and, check it out, we have a rerecorded version of "I Feel That I've Known You Forever".
The songs are well-selected, particularly "It Feels So Right", in one early scene which culminates in a well-directed fight scene.
The setting itself is fun: a dude ranch for girlfriends of rich old guys. Or something like that. You know Elvis is gonna have a field day.
Take the money and run! - By: Critics Rule, 14 Jan 2004
This is just about the worst Elvis film ever (although Stay Away, Joe & Harem Holiday are up there too).
No laughs, the songs are old ones he recorded years before & are just stuck in the film (they probably used sellotape to do it!) & the acting is the pits. The sets are cheap, the costumes are dreadful & the acting, well lets just say that it wouldn't (and didn't) win any awards.
It's like the American version of a Carry On film (without the laughs). Can you imagine the biggest star in the world today, as Elvis was then, starring in something like this. It just would not be contemplated. Was he completely out of the game when he got the script for this. At the time, the studio involved was facing bankrupcy & it shows.
He reallly did just take the money & did run - he should have kept on going but he went on to make one turkey after another. Those drugs must reallly distort your perception of reality.
Utter garbage.
