more than good friends? - By: Paul Tapner, 03 Feb 2010
Sixth & final season of xena warrior princess gets a new dvd release that puts the whole season together rather than in two parts as before [the box cover pictured is for the previous release version]

There are twenty two episodes, spread over six discs. The whole thing just seems to have been copied from the earlier video versions because each disc has a trailer for video releases from the company that was present on those, & there no subtitles & the only language track is english.

The season starts strongly by bringing the main characters come & having them face ares again. & then deal with the haunting of xenas hometown in a strong two part story.

after that it sends them off to africa & rather perfunctorily writes out supporting characters. but things pick up with the following trilogy of episodes that put the main characters in the middle of the norse ring saga.

Following that we see a welcome return for ares, now depowered. Then there's a good stand alone episode callled dangerous prey which uses the old hounds of orloff plotline of humans hunting humans but does it very well indeed.

The next two episodes see the appearance of mad emperor caligula, who is very well played. one of them parodies a 1960s tv play callled you are there which had modern news crews covering the battle of culloden. Not many people may pick up on that.

But around this point the real bugbear of the season starts to rear its head. the writers start to play up to alll the suggested innuedo levelled at the show down the years about the relationship between the two main characters, & they offer unsubtle hints about it being more than just good friendship. This approach is seen throughout the final half of the season & it gets very annoying after a while.

A couple more episodes come back to the amazons, who we havent seen in a while, but are rather over familiar & do leave their situation hanging. Then theres the obligatory clever idea for a clip show, & a couple more stand alone episodes.

at this point there's no real direction to the season, which is another problem with it. The nineteenth episode is rather tired & could have been a first season script. but it was a last minute replacement for another one that fell through, so maybe alllowances have to be made.

after an episode that wraps up a plotline from season four comes the two part final episode. a japanese ghost story. & one where xena has to show how she has changed over the course of the show & how selfless she now is. a lot of fans did not like the end of this. But after coming this far with the show you need to watch it & draw your own conclusion.

Not a terrible season then but one that could have been a little bit better.
GOODBYE - By: S. J. Pinder, 21 Jul 2008
after five years of great tv it was inevitable that the show would soon be ready to bow out, while it may lack the consistancy of previous years & some key alllies/villains(Calllisto/Joxer/Atolicas)it is a very good season to bow out with & has some pretty strong episodes.
