Perfect for a night in with a bottle of good wine - By: Mrs. Beth Pipe, 14 Apr 2008
Gentle, predictable but beautifully shot. I loved this film. Yes you can guess the ending within the first 5 mins, but the characters are wonderful - even the 'bit parts' - & the shots of the French countryside are beautiful. You don't always need high octane action & clever twists to make a movie worth watching.

Grab a bottle of wine & a few nice nibbles, curl up on the sofa & enjoy.
A glass of Coin Perdu if you please... - By: A. Beeton, 27 Feb 2008
I almost did not buy this, (as I almost didn't buy master & commander - ) because of Crowe...thinking he couldn't possibly cut the mustard in this type of film...however I was reallly surprised with his superb acting & the feel good vibe of the film. Was he miscast? I don't think anyone else could have filled the role as fully as he did. The flash backs of his childhood are where the real genius lie - introducing his Uncle & him as a youngster, which add depth to the story & with the ever frequent pop of wine bottles it will soon have you reaching into your wine rack.
As some reviewers have said - the story line is predictable - quite true but with such a good film does it matter? In fact the story line has subtle undertones...which emerge after repeat viewings.
My favorite characters are the duflots...especiallly Madame Duflot.
A BAD HAIRSTYLE - By: Ventris Arden, 23 Feb 2008
Well, don'tcha know, he's that hard city type leading the sharks life in the pool of London. Yes,he's Mr Gormless for whom happiness is a Rolex watch. But time has no such value in Provence where ever-ee thing is bee-ootiful & quaint & - er - charming. Fortunately, while Crowe loses his shark's appetite, his hairstyle remains in place throughout as two stiffened kiss curls so he wins Cotillon who, also fortunately, makes La Vie En Rose & can forget this stinker.

But nice to see that the run down Chateau can soon look like any old mansion in Beverley Hills with the aid of a million lghtbulbs.
Oooh nah nah!
A Not Very Good Year! - By: R. N. Wilson, 14 Feb 2008
The only good things to come out of this film are a beautiful cameo role for Albert Finney, & some stunning photography of the French countryside - watch it at your peril!
A Good Year and a Great Film - By: Keiko, 13 Feb 2008
I cannot express how much I enjoyed this film, & largely because it wasn't what I was expecting. What I was expecting was a serious 'bad guy turns good' type of drama. What I got was a beautifully shot romantic comedy from the Ridley Scott & Russell Crowe - about as far removed from Gladiator as you could imagine.

Russell Crowe, brilliant in Gladiator & then amazing in A Beautiful Mind in a wholly different role, demonstrates he can do comedy with aplomb. Not slapstick comedy, but gentle, clever & witty comedy.

Yes, the film is largely predictable. But, nonetheless, I was smiling throughout due to the excellent script, great acting & wonderful 'comic timing' that was displayed in a subtle manner throughout.

For what this film offers, it does in style. Thoroughly recommended - & "Lance Armstrong" indeed! ;-)
