Popcorn action thriller - By: Split-Pea Soup, 27 Feb 2010
I picked this up because it was cheap. I was hesitant to buy it because of the not so positive reviews, but I went ahead anyway.
I was very surprised. The concept is believable, & one may say it destroys both of the legendary original films & premises, but I think the director pulls it off well. If you go into this film with the mindset that it is just a good popcorn action film, you will completely enjoy it. The acting is nothing to write home about, but you get what you expect, & I expected this from a film with a title like Alien vs Predator. The two legendary monsters duke it out underground in the Antarctic with humans mixed in for fun & for a reason, which I will not reveal to spoil it. Though a true fan of the originals could guess the reason. All in alll, a great Friday night feature for me, & I will definitely watch this again. I don't regret buying this at alll.
The blu-ray-
Picture Quality-
The 1080P transfer is nothing short of brilliant. There are some beautiful scenes of the Antarctic throughout & the night scenes are very well rendered. I can't say anything negative whatsoever about the quality of the picture, it is in a word, fantastic.
Sound Quality-
Not only did Fox put out a great video transfer on this, but the DTS-HD MA track is super. All the channels get a great workout, the bass is good, not overpowering, but definitely there when needed. The dialogue is very clear, & the music score well done. It is reference quality sound.
Summary-
An excellent picture & sound quality film, with a bold, well pulled off premise. At this price it is a steal.
Better than it's given credit for - By: Alfie, 29 Jun 2009
Firstly this is a much maligned movie & I won't dwell too much on the plot which simply revolves around an underground temple buried 2000ft below the Antarctic which has been discovered by a billionaire who recruits a team to find & explore it. What the temple actuallly turns out to be is a Predator-built fun-house that they use to sacrifice humans so that they can chase Aliens around for sport. The next 90mins is the crew getting picked off by both the Predators & Aliens as they find themselves in the middle of the "hunt".
Look, it's a stupid movie with silly dialogue, predictable plot & if you're expecting something as good as Alien (or even the original Predator) then you'll be disappointed. If however, you have the intelligence to suspend your disbelief & watch a good action/chase movie with a bit of gore, lots of shooting & aliens & Predators then this is for you. It's great fun & not to be taken seriously.
It's a decent, if not perfect blu ray transfer & certainly better than others have written on here. A clear improvement on upscaled DVD. i watched it, loved it & was impressed by the blu ray. Hope that helps.
Cool Movie That Gives A More Human Element To The Predators - By: Steven Stewart, 18 Jun 2008
Before this film even existed I was never familiar that there was a whole universe of Alien vs Predator type stuff like comics, games etc so I was quite shocked that they made this movie & felt it would simply be another vs movie much like Freddy vs Jason. In a way it became what I expected it to be but with a little more on top, it was disappointing yet enjoyable at the same time. The major tag line for the movie was "Whoever wins, We lose" which when you watch this film you come to learn that actuallly that's not strictly true. The story is about a team of Archeologists who discover that there may be an ancient Aztec temple 2,000 feet under the Antarctic ice & they want to go on an expedition to explore this temple, however they find themselves in the middle of an even greater problem, a war between Alien species.
This wasn't a reflection of what you would expect from a typical Alien or Predator movie as there is very little blood & guts & little genuine horror. We are given, however, a more human look at the Predators as we come to learn that them being on our planet is simply a hunt & they don't injure or maim those who are un-armed. To those familiar with the comics or graphic novels of the AVP series this may be a regular thing to see but to those who are just familiar with both sets of movies, this is a surprising dimension to be given to the Predators.
Paul W.S. Anderson received a lot of criticism for this movie & to some it may be rightly so but to me I feel it's unfounded as I saw this to be a very good & entertaining movie that most everyone should own.
a good movie just need a little helping hand - By: rene smith, 15 Feb 2008
this is a reallly good movie. well about what the other said about the HD transfer. it is good but not great. this is what i did for you to get the good resort. you will need to adjust your TV contrast to full & the brightness & had a little bit of more colour. that should do the trick
Not talking too much about the movie - By: Tsuki, 02 Feb 2008
I'm not going to talk that much about the movie because I loved it, as I am a fan of alll things that contain Giger's Alien, so... 5 stars to the movie.
The 3 start are because I saw the trailer from the online PS3 store & I thought to myself: I need to have this movie in Blu-Ray format (I already have the regular DVD).
I was disappointed to notice that the quality isn't THAT good or THAT different from the DVD format. True, I have a DVD with upscaling, so alll the DVD's look good to me, but I noticed that the Blu-Ray movie would sometimes be filled with "noise", speciallly in the darker scenes, when it should be flawless.
So, if you have a DVD reader that can do upscaling, just stick to the regular DVD's for now. Blu-ray format is only worth if the movie was already made to support high definition.
