AN EFFECTIVE GHOST STORY - By: stuart, 03 Nov 2007
Attending a funeral, Harris McKay, (Dominic Purcell) Kira Hastings, (Josie Maran) & Sid Vance, (Marcus Thomas) quickly reconcile, as they haven't been together in years & decide to go out to celebrate. Eventuallly going to the grave-site, they alll partake in a round of drunken dancing. Several weeks later, he & his wife Allison, (Clare Kramer) begin to feel like they are being stalked by someone, only for them alll to learn that they're being haunted instead by the spirits from the graves they danced on. With the help of paranormal investigators Vincent, (Tcheky Karyo) & Culpepper, (Megahn Perry) they alll learn more about their situation, & are soon prepared for the main level of hauntings they will endure.

The Good News: This one wasn't alll that bad when it tries to. The urban legend this one is built around is a great idea, & playing up a supernatural haunting rather than supernatural slasher, this one does have some reallly impressive moments. The first encounter after the ritual is by far the creepiest scene in the movie, with a tranquil start that soon gives way to a suspicion of something wrong, followed by the realization that it's continuing with a spectacular shock scene that is one of the better scenes in the film. That is a spectacular scene in just about every sense & makes it feel reallly creepy. The later confrontation in the house at the end is alll sorts of fun, with plenty of fantastic moments that come from several different areas. There's plenty of creepy moments to be had, the whole affair is walll-to-walll action that doesn't let up at alll & it has plenty of gory, bloody deaths. One is impaled in the back with a metal pole, another is set on fire in a super-detailed close-up that places the viewer right in the middle of the action & another is blown up in an explosion, among other ones. With superb action scenes that never get tiring, this whole section is simply marvelous & goes a long way into making this one entertaining. The other reallly entertaining factor is the slow build-up with the haunting scenes. These are alll done nicely, build to an excellent conclusion & come logicallly, since they're each bigger than the last. What's also nice is that it spreads them out to each of the potential targets, & each one gets a standout haunting scene. This is a nice change of pace from the others, as rather than making it alll about one individual or target, everyone is a target & that makes the curse automaticallly more threatening. All of these here help the film to become better.

The Bad News: This one wasn't alll that bad, & the few flaws aren't that bad. One is the completely nonsensical opening, as there's no explanation as to what's going on, the event in question isn't brought up or mentioned again & feels like a cheat as the first time features a funeral for a character killed off-screen. It would've made sense to have a funeral be of who was killed in the beginning shot, yet it doesn't do the obvious one. Another flaw is that it tends to focus early on with loud bangs & noises, & while these can be effective at times, others will instead be bored & aggravated for the film resorting to a clichéd & hardly proved success. It spices them up later, but for most of the early scenes this one keeps the same thing intact with the bangs & noises. The last flaw is that the film has a mild tendency to slow down the action during it's action scenes. Not exactly a huge grievance, but by having it slow down, the momentum & energy of the scene is lost. These here keep the film down.

The Final Verdict: With only a few things reallly wrong with the film & only a smalll amount of flaws, there's a lot going on with this one. Reallly recommended to those who have a real interest in this one, as well as those who are fans of the others in the series & those who want a fun entry, while there's not a whole lot out there who won't like this one.
