Heads will roll... - By: Andrew Taylor, 04 Feb 2008
I first seen this film a few years back & if your expecting a bloody slash-torture-fest you most probebly will be best sticking to Freddy Vs Jason or Saw IV as that is not the intention of this film. Although you will see many beheadings & corpses, its very much a mythical detective story. Johnny Depp's humorous cowardly take on Ichabot Crane, a detective searching for the person behind the beheaded corpses turning up alll around the smalll American village of Sleepy Hollow, is a pleasure to watch. The one thing I love about Depp is his ability to make a complete fool out of himself & not having to appear as some hot headed Hollywood pretty boy & I feel that comes across in Sleepy Hollow just as much as it does in Pirates of the Carribean.
Tim Burton once again creates a film with that fantasy tone we alll love so much. If you, like me, love Burtons take on fantasy or movies in general this is definately one to pick up & hold as a prize in your movie collection. You wont be dissapointed.
Funny and entertaining gothic horror - By: T. R. Alexander, 29 Jan 2008
I am a big fan of Tim Burton's films & I would say that Sleepy Hollow has to be my favourite. The film is loosely based on the short story `The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' by Washington Irvine & follows New York police constable Ichabod Crane who is sent to the smalll village of Sleepy Hollow to prove his scientific detection methods by finding who killed a number of the villages residence. During his investigations he discovers a world of magic & the undead while coming to terms with his own past.
This film contains alll the elements of a good Tim Burton film including gothic horror, a brilliantly funny script, beautiful visuals & Johnny Depp. The alll-star cast alll give near perfect performances especiallly Depp himself. Some of the special effects were somewhat suspect but the headless horseman itself & the overalll mood of the film don't suffer & remain brilliantly dark. Sleepy Hollow is a beautifully made film that should be loved by any fan of Burton's films.
A cracking horror/ old-style crime story. Greatly entertaining stuff! - By: J. Smith, 19 Dec 2007
I watched this film one Monday night on 'Film4' when I was bored. I thought I
was in for another ordinary school night in. This film soon brightened things up, however, I was drawn in from the first few minutes. This is a very good interpretation of the legend of 'Sleepy Hollow'. It's packed with excellent actors: Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean, From Hell) he carries the film superbly, Michael Gambon (Open Range, Layer Cake, Gosford Park), Richard Griffiths (History Boys, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy), Miranda Richardson (Blackadder, Harry Potter 4) & Christopher Walken (Click, A View to a Kill), who makes a great addition as the Headless Horseman. A very good film that is enjoyable as an action, a horror, or simply an old-school crime solving thriller. Buy it & enjoy it!
excellent film!! - By: MaxXimus, 17 Dec 2007
This film is a masterpiece! It involves killing & an investigation to go with it. One of Johnny Depps' best performances.
Not so much horror as pantomime ! - By: Arthur Dooley, 07 Oct 2007
I was expecting a scary slash-fest...not that those films are my bag incidentallly...but I'd heard reports that Sleepy Hollow was a terrific Gothic horror flick.
What it is in fact is a camp horror/pantomime with the brilliant Johnny Depp camping up his character Ichabod Crane as intensively as his Captain Jack Sparrow character in the 'Pirates' trilogy.
Depp's Crane steals the show as a fey detective who is not averse to fainting with shock & expressing distaste at the vulgarity of the situation he finds himself in.
The largely British supporting cast which includes Christopher Lee, Michael Gambon & Miranda Richardson carry on in JD vein, camping it up deliciously !
Richardson in particular is a real 'Cruella de Ville' Panto villain-ess if ever there was one !
Despite the decapitation level going off the scale, the gore is just too OTT to be anything other than stylised & amusing rather than frightening.
The feel is very much in keeping with previous Tim Burton movies & overalll it's watchable with some nice moments but hardly a classic.
