An endearing sci-fi tale with considerable crossover appeal - By: O. Parker, 08 Feb 2007
Donnie Darko is a remarkable writing & directing debut for Richard Kelly & the film which deservedly propelled Jake Gyllenhaalll to stardom. It's a brainteasing sci-fi film at heart but it's appeal is bolstered by convincing performances across the board, particularly Maggie Gyllenhaalll, Mary McDonnell & Holmes Osbourne as Donnie's family & Drew Barrymore as his English teacher as well as Jake Gyllenhaalll in the title role. Noah Wyle of ER fame makes a rare decent film appearance as another of Donnie's teachers & Patrick Swayze is well cast as a slick self help guru. Personallly Jena Malone was the most endearing cast member & was wholly believable as the melancholy new girl who Donnie fallls for.

The sound track is skilfully assembled & evocative of my own 80s childhood. The script is charming & funny throughout. This adds up to a surprisingly enjoyable sci-fi film with considerable mainstream appeal. When I saw it on first release I felt that I had uncovered a hidden gem & this feeling was shared by many others until the film became quite well known. It is also rewarding on repeated viewings which I'm sure contributed to its snowballling success. I'd urge anyone who has yet to see it to try it & even if you are put off by the sci-fi elements the rest of the film still holds much to enjoy.
