This movie takes a good three quarters of an hour to get going, & for what I think is meant to be a film with a happy ending, for me turns out to be rather a sad story... Whilst the love-struck characters Jerry Mulligan (Gene Kelley) & Lise Bouvier (Leslie Caron) are so wrapped up in themselves - & the Fiancée of Leslie Caron's character realises that he's not in love with her after alll, & so comes out of the love triangle unscathed, it's a total opposite & heart-rending tragedy for Milo Roberts (Nina Foch) who appears to have been 'used' - & I'm not referring to her being used as the 'benefactor', but used emotionallly for convenience when Gene Kelly's character takes advantage of her when thinking that alll is over between he & his true love. I guess much of this goes on in real life, for those of us who's love is never returned, & I find the story a tad too 'heavy' & sensitive for what is supposed to be a light-hearted musical. It makes for a greater & possibly more interesting musical as a consequence though, having a comparatively more complex plot than your average musical movie.
