Rather disingenuous DVD 'extras' - By: Awed, 14 Jul 2008
First off, this is probably the greatest TV show of alll time....Hilariously funny, original & endlessly rewatchable....It's still being ripped off, 10 years later, by alll manner of inferior talents.
But what's with the claim on the back of the box that it contains "Special features: deleted scenes, outtakes & cast interviews"....hey guess what? there's 21 episodes here, & 20 of them are 'bare bones', no extras, absolutely nothing. The last episode has extras, but the rest have nothing. So how contemptuous of the punter can you get? Let's put the promise on the back of the box, leave it nice & vague....Any casual punter will naturallly assume that these additionals scenes, outtakes & interviews relate to the whole series....they don't! they could have just stated that there's extras for the final show, but that would require honesty & respect for the person buying the DVD & we can't have that....can we? The extras relate to the final show, only; a show far inferior to the original 3 series.
Why Aherne & Cash don't give any interview footage is anybody's guess...Instead, we get the rest of the cast telling us how delighted they were to receive the news that a new show was on the way....Obviously the writers were too far up their own, to make any comment.
Anyway, this is a fabulous show, & should be endless stars...the DVD presentation leaves a somewhat sour taste though...
shes got some lovely wrap-around skirts has Judith Chalmers..... - By: scousebird, 04 May 2008
I was an avid viewer of Series 1 & 2 but sort of let season 3 pass me by.
Its only when I watched the Queen of Sheba that I remembered what a cracking classic show this reallly was & wasted no time in ordering the complete DVD collection-money well spent in my opinion.
Why?
Well for starters apart from the main cast,Jim,Barbra & co being their usual excellent selves I had forgotten how funny the likes of Cheryl,Twiggy,Mary & Jo are not forgetting Darren & the wonderful Nanna.
Its a joy to watch them from the beginning[series 1] right through to the end[Queen of Sheba],not forgetting to mention that Jim has the same stripy top on in nearly every episode[apart from the "do's"].
I doubt there isn't anybody reading this who hasn't seen at least one episode from any of the series 1-3 so I don't need to go on about each individual charactor, but reallly,if you were put off watching, for whatever reason, then give it another chance as once you start watching episodes back to back you will, like myself, realise what you were missing!
A Window to Society Or a Great Comedy? - By: M. Lead, 22 Dec 2007
I love this television show but sometimes I watch it & think "my god people reallly are like this & live like this". Other times, more often than not, I watch it & think "what a great piece of writing & acting". To think of it as a window to society only complements the programmes writers & actors, which is what I certainly do.
I don`t think I`m a snob but in real life this is a trap I would not like to falll into.
Great series that has a beginning, a middle & end. The last show breaks your heart but be prepared to have your heart broken again when you watch the deleted scenes.
Happy Tears - By: Robert P. Splaine, 10 Dec 2007
I had waited until Christmas day to watch this. To say l am a fan of the Royle family, is an understatement, l quite simply adore alll the cast who appear. Being lucky enough to have met Ricky twice, & he was a Gentleman.
I wanted to savour the show & what a day to do it. Anyway the show.....
We alll cried at Doris Day's Ka sar'a,and her passing & we alll laughed at a surprise appearance of Twiggy (Geoffrey Hughes),and the dance laying the laminate, Nana's hair extensions, & her posh nails. One of my favourite bits was Jim dancing in the halll with Norma. Could it have been better? NO WAY, l would go as far as to say it was TV History in the making.
Anyone who has lived in Wythenshawe in a council house will understand where alll this comes from.
If l had to find a fault (and l cant reallly) it would be that Caroline Aherne wore a tad to much make up, as she is beautiful enough, l know thats her character, so it isnt a fault..
There are so many funny bits in it, l could write alll day. If you have seen one episode of the Royle family & liked it, you will love this.
Its one of the 10 things l would take on a desert island, can l say more?
Well, done Craig, Phil AND OF COURSE CAROLINE,
Very Good My Arse - By: Kimberley Morris, 26 Jul 2007
This was the worse series ive ever seen after watching it on the televison. I was Very disappointed, Pulled an alll nighter watching the Series & then spent the day after some sleep, watching the Queen Of Sheba, & was throughly disappointed. Apart from great acting from Ralf Little, & Liz Smith & Sue Johnston, the Queen of Sheba was pure crap. Craig Cash's son can not act & is very disappointing, Craig Cash is also very disappointing a case of like Father like Son. Caroline Aherne is annoying & Ricky Tomlinson just reverts back to the old Jim. The supporting cast is also disapointting & although this was a second hand copy bought form Amazon i was soooo disappointed. Jessica Stevenson has done better work than this "crap", e.g Joan in Doctor Who. All in alll i found the extras much better, especiallly the Interviews & of course it still leaves some questions unanswered, such as what happened to Emma & Anthony & where the hell did they get that Massive Television???
