Story fabricated on an actual act of terrorism - By: M. A. Ramos, 05 Oct 2007
This movie is inspired by real events, but is a work of fiction. From the book Vengeance & history we only know that terrorists killed the Israel Olympians in Munich & the people who were claimed to be associated with Black September were later killed.
In this movie Spielberg weaves a story around those two basic facts that give us an intense story line of the secret Israeli squad assigned to track down & assassinate alll eleven Palestinians to have planned the 1972 Munich massacre of eleven Israeli athletes. The director seems to focus on the personal toll this mission of revenge takes on the team & the man who led it.
My brother had worked as a volunteer at those Olympics so we were close to the tragedy. And it was a horrible tragedy. But knowing of the Mossad, I doubt this is realistic. Also I doubt their chosen agents would be this incompetent. And the sex scenes in the movie serve no purpose as is stated elsewhere. Other then that it is an OK action film. The topic of terrorism & retaliation is as relevant today as it was in 1972.
Spielberg's revenge Movie... - By: Milt Ingarfield, 09 Sep 2006
This is set in the aftermath of the massacre of Israeli Olympic team at the 1972 Munich games, is based in fact & is told with a great deal of skill by Steven Spielberg.
Eric Bana (Troy) stars as the leader of a group of assassins assembled to exact the "eye for eye" policy of his government as the acts of revenge are carried out on the Palestinian "Black September" group, the wanton deaths spiral out of control in what turns out to be futile acts of vengeance.
As time goes on Eric Bana's character becomes more & more disillusioned with his mission, this production manages to keep the viewer on the edge of their seat without making the carnage on screen the only reason to watch, this is Spielberg's most mature & thoughtful movie since Schindler's List & lookout for Daniel Craig as one of the assassins in this superbly crafted film is highly recommended viewing.
