"Like a lot of men son, riding west with a secret" - By: Mark Pearce, 08 Jan 2008
Three brothers, for different reasons, are forced to leave their home. Two,Orrin(Tom Sellack)and Ty(Jeff Osterhage)end up together on a cattle drive eventuallly becoming lawmen in Santa Fe.The other ,Tell(Sam Elliott)ends up gold prospecting in the Rockies but their paths eventuallly cross when the Bigalow clan headed up by Ira(Jack Elam)who are after Tell track him down to a smalll border town which brings Orrin & Ty running to the side of their brother.
Based upon two of Louis L'Amour's many Sacketts novels, the gunplay is a little pokey & plot developments are played heavy handedly when the finesse of say a Lonesome Dove is needed.Peter Osterhage(save for one tension filled showdown)is weak as is Tom Sellack in a strangely subdued performance.
All that said Sam Elliott is terrific as always as is Ben Johnson as Cap Roundtree & Glenn Ford(in one of his last roles)as ramrod Tom Sunday.
Veteran director Robert Totten does an adequate job but he reallly should have made more of Jim Byrnes excellent screenplay.
For Elliott enthusiasts an essential purchase.
