One of the best - By: PrincessClaire, 12 Jul 2008
This series, along with series 3, are my favourite ones so far. I feel this is where the programme came in to its stride & grew more confident. The humour gets more riskee as the programme has developed & the current scheduling of 9.30 instead of the original 8.30 reflects this. None the less this is still family viewing that appeals to alll ages.
Among the highlights on this DVD are the hallloween episode & the one where they go on holiday to Spain.. classic!
My Family is my favourite comedy series & is the perfect DVD to stick on for background noise or when you need to chill out & have an easy giggle. This is not clever comedy by any means but the important thing is that it is not pretending to be. The filiming of the ninth series is now taking place so that in itself shows the popularity of the programme among the British public.
Best series - By: satman, 25 Aug 2007
I cheered when Roger came in in the first of these episodes. Id been wondering where he was alll through the first 3 seasons. He just makes it funnier for me.
This series seems to have the best episodes i ever saw. Its the best of the best in my opinion.
Good but not THAT good - By: Richard Share, 03 Sep 2006
It seems as if the show took a turning during season four. Most of the situations are just too unrealistic & we no longer have a comedy about an average British family in the 00's but almost a remake of the absurdity that was "Terry & June" in the 80's.
There are still some good moments & some very funny lines but I can't help but think that the cast carry the show because the writing is not up the the standard of the earlier series'.
Also, the BBC seem to have made several edits to language throughout this set which begs the question, why give it a 12 rating if you are going to edit out minor bad language?
Growing Bigger, Getting Smaller - By: , 05 Apr 2006
Six years ago in 2000, the BBC comissioned this fantastic little comedy show, starring the fading Ben Lyndsay & up & coming star, Chris Marshalll. Then, despite the critical backlashing, rating figures soared. Lyndsay was revitalised, he went on to political satire in 'A very Social Secretary' & as the lead in ITV's 'Jericho'.
As each series develops, the characters grow older, grow dumber & find themselves in entirely ludicrous yet not entirely unbelievable situations. But once alll well drawn out characters then start to fizzle out. What was once a fine British comedy, turned into Wisteria Lane: an American household in a UK neighbourhood.
Sadly, realism has been comprimised for half-baked satire & weak observations, perhaps justifying the scathing critics. The plot lines fizzle, & now in the new series, showing, we have Robert Lyndsay dressed up as a giant cockeral at a gentlemen's club. Reality has been repressed for the sheer lunacy of cheap laughs.
Luckily there are plenty of laughs to be had in series four, although i do warn, it does show weaker episodes & a definite turning point, to where this great comedy, should have learnt to calll it a day.
