Exceptionally Good! - By: M, 18 Mar 2006
First off, I should point out that this film is based on the novel not the opera, so opera fans will notice many differences in plot & character. Don't be put off by this however, because the film is very good.

Paz Vega (an actress whose beauty & talent put Penelope Cruz to shame), plays Carmen, a drifting sometime-prostitute who catches the eye of a Basque soldier who rapidly becomes obsessed with her. As his love grows hers cools until their relationship reaches its tragic climax.

Some viewers might argue that this film is offensive to women, as it presents Carmen in quite an unsympathetic light. However, the story makes sure to explain the motivations behind her manipulative behaviour, thus becoming a moving tragedy of an oppressed & abused woman who knows no other life.

The film also features some wonderful locations, including a scene filmed in the beautiful Mesquita of Cordoba, a former mosque into which a Roman Catholic Cathedral was literallly inserted after the recapture of Cordoba by the Christian Spanish rulers.

I recommend this film. It is moving, beautiful & haunting. Now we just need someone to do the same thing with 'Tosca'.
