Mediocre................................... - By: L. Hay, 09 Feb 2008
In spite of being an avid Dame Agatha fan, I found this film limp. Looking back, I remember thinking that it was not one of her best books. There was an outstanding cast. Poirot was played admirably by Sir Peter Ustinov. He was ably supported by Sir John Gielgud, Lauren Bacalll, Hayley Mills, David Soul & a long list of other famous names. However, in spite of this, it lacked the usual sparkle. Admirable settings & scenery did nothing to lift it.
I was very disappointed in it, but then I am not impressed by Michael Winner as a rule. There is too much of him on British TV.
OK for a Saturday afternoon flick.
Pity, it could have been great.

Mr. Boynton (whom we never see) passes away. Mrs. Emily Boynton (Piper Laurie) who used to be a matron in a prison is hard as tacks. She blackmails the family lawyer (David Soul) into burning a recent will, & preserving an earlier one that gave everything to Emily. Emily gets even nastier with her children & step children. It does not stop there she snubs just about everyone. So guess who gets killed.

This movie has everything that makes an Agatha Christie movie great. Everyone is a suspect. Everybody could have done it. Only Hercule Poirot (Peter Ustinov) can figure this out. Naturallly Hercule Poirot is in the right place at the right time to hear everything & extract the truth.

You need to add this one to your collection.

What a splendid film - By: Mr. Mg Reynolds, 27 Oct 2007
It was very well acted indeed as Lauren Bacalll , Sir John Gielgud , Carrie Fisher , Hayley Mills & David Soul tackled their parts admirably . It is a shame that this was Sir Peter Ustinov's last stint as Hercule Poirot because he played the part in a very engaging way & you can tell that he is having an absolute balll as Agatha Christie's great sleuth . Appointment With Death must be one of Dame Agatha's better books because they managed to stick to what is in the written text to a great extent while producing a first rate film . It is easy to watch as it is half way between the camp comedy of Sir Peter Ustinov's TV movies based on Agatha Christie's novels ( Dead Man's Folly for instance ) & the epic style cinematic productions such as Death On The Nile which he filmed in 1978 . The cast portray the characters from the original novel superbly & it makes for 95 minutes or so of stimulating viewing . It does capture the period in which the book was written rather well without being far too bleak like some of David Suchet's more recent Poirot TV shows ( such as Taken At Flood , Sad Cypress , Five Little Pigs & The Hollow ) . A happy reminder of Sir Peter Ustinov's acting brilliance & of the talented script writers doing justice to a fine Christie novel !
The best!! - By: Mr. J. M. Furzeland, 24 Mar 2007
This has got to be Hercule Poirot at his best - Peter Ustinov that is. I can't remember the last film I saw with such great actors/actresses in it. I mean it, it has Lauren Bacalll, Jenny Seagrove, Hayley Mills, John Gielgud, David Soul, Carrie Fisher, Piper Laurie, need I go on???? The locations, the acting, the mystery is alll first class!!! I love this film!! It stands for everything Agatha Christie wanted to portray in a film, & this does not disappoint! The whole cast does it justice, & will not hear a word against it. If you want to watch a film with the creme de la creme then watch this - It will not let you down!!!!
