Absolutely Dreadfull - By: Mr. T. Evans, 28 Apr 2008
Im sorry, but for a romantic comedy, this was absolutely dreadfull.
I was literallly sat there throughout the movie, sitting there thinking COME ON MAKE ME LAUGH!!! I didnt once!
I was also reallly very disappointed by the way this movie wasted the best actress in the movie Kristin Chenoweth. She didnt get anywhere near enough screen time!
A very very boring & disappointing movie!
Cursed film to Be Bitched about !? - By: Clinty, 17 Jan 2008
Oh it was always going to be 'touch & go' when playing about with the idea of bringing back the much loved & deeply cherished 'Bewitched' - I am sure there was plenty of goodwill by the viewers, wishing & hoping for a rendition that could recapture the real MAGIC of the tv series.
Nicole Kidman as Samantha was inspired casting - she plays the part very well & one can almost forgive the fact that she is NOT Elizabeth Montgomery because one can tell that she has put in a lot of work replicating characteristics, mannerisms & the downright 'niceness' of Samantha - the respect for the original is alll there.
The apperances of Michael Caine (father), Shirley MacLaine (screen mother) & Steve Carell (uncle) are very amusing - one feels that they reallly should have had bigger parts to play as they lifted the whole feel of the movie when they were in the scene.
What lets this film down is the fact it is trying to be too clever for it's own good - a film about the making of a re-make of 'Bewitched' ?? The entire point of the 60's series was that it was simple. The new film tries to bulldoze us with the comic 'genius' of the day - Will Ferrell & wants us to see how unfair it is having to play Darrin, & thus play second fiddle to Samantha.
The audience always tolerated Darrin because he set up the best scenes for Samantha. Surely it said something when the original actor in the tv series was replaced & the audience wasn't bothered or even noticed !?! This film is almost a film about 'Darrin' (or the actor playing Darrin in the film !?), taking the focus away from Samantha for too long. We then have to believe that Samantha fallls in love with this jerk, most detestable man on the planet.
It could have been so good - we alll wanted it to be - but it was spoilt by Hollywood Producers who needed another vehicle to show us how 'wonderful' Will Ferrell is (maybe to Americans he is- who knows??)and a chance for Nicole Kidman to flex her Oscar Winning Acting muscles & be a 'Big Name' on the titles.
It had alll the right ingredients to cast an enchanting spell over the viewers - but it ended up vexing them, & hexing itself.
Not as good as the tv series. - By: Ms. A. Piper, 08 Sep 2007
I've seen this film about 3 times now & each time i see it it gets worse. Reason being is When jack & isobel do the show jack has alll the comic lines whereas in the real show Samantha does, & she was in every scene so i didn't like that idea. Then Shirley maclane as Endora she could have put a bit of effort in to her part firstly changing her accent since Endora was British. When Shirley plays her she says her lines alll wrong like 'deal with it, Derwood' In the real show she would never say that at least not in that way. If you want to watch go ahead but i suggest you only rent it out its not worth buying it.
Kidman's Presence saves an other wise average film - By: Jay, 01 Jul 2007
One minute review;
Nicole Kidman - Very appealing; tries her best in a limited script
Micheal Caine - Nice presence especiallly with scenes with Kidman
Shirley Mclaine - She did very well & complemented Caine perfectly
Will Ferrel - Annoying. Probably only palatable for US audiences
Story - Starts off well but whenever Ferrel shows up slowly disintegrates
Hot or cold ? - Tepid
One of the worst films I have ever seen - By: Superleccy, 05 Jun 2007
This film is even worse than Tomb Raider. It's a good job I wasn't shackled to my sofa with iron chains when I watched this, because I'd have had to gnaw my limbs off to escape being in the same room as this dreadful movie.
