Over Rated - By: C. E. Cox, 25 May 2008
Some people say this is a masterpiece. Only the last half an hour came close, the first hour is boring, unrealistic & tedious. There are two main problems, the first is that the acting is like watching paint dry. I can't believe Zizy Zhang was in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, (that was so much better than this). In Hidden Dragon she was entertaining. In this she acts like a scared puppy. Her fellow actor Takeshi Kaneshiro is atrocious, & Andy Lau isn't much better. The second problem is that apart from the end fight scene it's seriously unrealistic.
Luckily the story line makes it watchable.
It is very romantic & touching, so If you like that & a bit of action this is worth renting, otherwise don't bother.
House of Flying Daggers - No 13 - All Time List 2008 - By: L. Ecclestone, 08 Apr 2008
A quite simply exquisite piece of art - beautiful beyond words - House of Flying Daggers is a fantastic Martial Arts / Love story obviously drawing comparisons to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon but this is different.
Firstly, the scenery is even more beautiful - probably the most beautiful movie there is - draw dropping forests, visuals & the ending - wow.
The colours here are amazingly intense, only second to Hero - another Zhang Yimou film more than worth seeing.
The love story here is wonderful too, it develops extremely well to an earth shattering & powerful finale in which the ever beautiful Zhang Ziyi plays another perfect part, I am sure many tear is shed by the end.
Some will argue the story isn't as deep as Crouching Tiger, & although true, the development of the three main characters adds to the spectacle of the film & I think having three main characters that you care about is much better than numerous anonymous individual added to spin-out the film.
Any fan of the genre must see this movie, as should anyone who appreciates wonderful, intense & powerful cinema. Fantastic.
YAWN! - By: A. Joseph, 30 Mar 2008
Don't believe the hype. Ok so it's pretty, so what! Takeshi Kaneshiro cannot use a sword to save his life...bummer for him. He's terribly popular in Japan for his pretty looks & even got his face on the Onimusha game character Samanosuke. But this film doesn't do him any justice whatsoever. The storyline was a real bore & the blind girl(can't be bothered to remember her name) is pretty & can probably fight but I am yet to be wowed by her abilities. She hasn't had much luck in her film roles has she?
American dollars made it possible to advertise this well so everyone has heard of it, believe me this does not make it a good movie! This, crouching tiger & hero are alll the same to me. Cashing in on a genre that has a massive following already just because they can't have any origional ideas of their own! If you have to watch a film of this ilk then Fearless is one of the better ones being that it's the closest to the epic martial arts movies that it so wants to be. I prefer the classics, Once upon a time in china, Twin dragons, Iron Monkey, Last hero in china...to name but a few.

Beautiful Cinematography - By: C. Henderson, 21 Jan 2008
It has to be said HOFD doesn't have the most enthrallling plot, however i can't help but love this film.
It is visuallly invigorating, one of the most beautifully shot films I think I've ever seen & it has a haunting soundtrack to match. Don't think of it as watching a film, think of it as experiencing a work of art.
If you can, watch this in high definition.
