Affectionate and affable but less than meets the eye - By: Trevor Willsmer, 05 Dec 2007
Nelly et Monsieur Arnaud is a chamber piece that never reallly goes anywhere. It's not so much that it's bad, more that it's slightly flat compared to Claude Sautet's earlier films like Les Choses de la Vie & Cesar et Rosalie despite an amusing cameo by Michel Lonsdale, appearing like a self-satisfied but slightly dense slug from time to time. It's a film that probably meant more to Sautet than his audience (Michel Serrault based his performance on the director, as witnessed by the photos of the two on the set in identical outfits & haircuts). To me it was little more than a time-passer with few insights, although the sight of Emmanuelle Beart's hopelessly inept attempts at faking being an accomplished typist offered some unintentional amusement: obviously this is one actress who never worked as a secretary while resting.
an exquisite coupling - By: Mrs. P. A. Mcguire, 06 May 2007
The best film, is the film ,that, manages to convey everything yet does it, in a minimal fashion.
'Nelly & Mr. Arnaud' is one such film.
Excellently directed by the master, the late Claude Sautet & acted to perfection by Emmanuelle Beart & one of my personal favourite actors, Michel Serrault, the film is heavenly bliss!
It is a film I never tire of watching.
Long live french cinema!
The force ot truth - By: Michael Lavocah, 03 Sep 2006
Nelly & Mr Arnaud never intend to have a physical relationship, & so, almost by accident, a relationship grows up between them which is full of respect. The film charts the growth of their intimacy as they meet the shocks of life. This is a subtle, nuanced film, full of humanity, which depicts powerful human emotions with great delicacy. French filmmaking at its best.
