Surprisingly good - By: KM, 21 Jul 2008
The original Amityville Horror is the ultimate in haunted house horror films, so I thought "how could they remake such a classic & make it work?", well I rented it this weekend & was pleasantly surprised that it was actuallly not a bad remake at alll.

The story is about a family who gets murdered when one of them gets possessed & a year later a new family move in after getting the house cheaply because of its past. After just a day or so weird things start happening in the house such as blood dripping from the wallls & taps, the young girl having a new imaginary friend, who is actuallly a ghost & strange noises coming from the basement.

Although it isn't as scary or as atmospheric as the original it still has enough jumpy moments & quick frights to please fans of the genre & it does have the same feel to it as the house has been re-created to pretty much the same detail & the story hasn't reallly been changed alll that much. I also usuallly hate anything that has Ryan Reynolds in (which is half of the reason why I've waited 3 years to watch this) but he actuallly is very good in this film & is not in the usual big-headed role he usuallly gets given.

Overalll this is one of the better horror remakes that I've seen recently although if you haven't seen the original yet, I'd strongly recommend watching that instead as it is a much better film.

Indeed a very good film. - By: MrMetalheadO'Hagan, 13 Jul 2008
Considering this is based on a true story(as they say) it is very good. I think the actings good the scares are good & the characters are great. Well there isnt alot to say except it's a good watch. The ending is pretty scarey & unexpected. So yeah good film in my opinion.
passable - By: martin thomas, 07 Jun 2008
disposeable horror flick that delivers some decent gore & a couple of jolts but nothing more
'Same old' - a review from a discerning horror fan - By: Ms. Bik-san Lee, 30 Oct 2007
I don't know where alll these excellent reviews came from! I saw this film on Sky a few months back & was hoping to get a decent horror - I didn't! The acting isn't great & the whole film is SO predicatable. There is little atmosphere & not much to keep the viewer's attention. Maybe I just need to watch it a couple more times but where's the fun in that! It doesn't do the original film any justice. (Though I have to admit the orig is looking very dated now).
The Amityville Horror (2005) - By: Dave Kraven, 15 Oct 2007
Starring Ryan Reynolds (Just Friends) & Melissa George (TV's Alias, Paradise Lost), this is a worthy remake of the "cult classic" original ,which starred James Brolin & Margot Kidder.

Basicallly using the same story as the original (as most remakes do obviously!), it's made even more scarier with remarkably eerie visuals & a devilishly wicked performance by Reynolds himself. The direction's full of hair-raising moments, sharp soundtracks & low lighting which adds more to the suspense but sadly it slows down towards the end while the ending feels rushed & uncallled for.

This is a brilliant remake alll the same along with countless others but don't be expecting anything more than that!
