An embarassment for Ridley Scott - By: Bwana Kobe, 15 Mar 2008
I bought this film despite Orlando Bloom, believing (wrongly) that a director of Ridly Scott's stature may be able to wring some tiny piece of acting ability from him.....He directed Alien ffs, surely this would be a great film!
The film started well. As you may expect from Scott, we were treated to great atmospherics & superb cinematograpy. But the high point of the film was about 5 minutes in & thereafter it slowly deteriorated.
The plot was implausible of course but that was never reallly the problem....it was just badly acted & disjointed & rambled on to a ridiculous conclusion.
The best thing about this film in fact is that Keira Knightly is not in it!
One to avoid....
Better than expected - By: Annie, 25 Feb 2008
I liked the look of this film when it was first released, but didn't make it to the cinema & was then put off by a few reviews that didn't rate it too highly. I finallly saw it on TV & thought that it was a superb film, full of action & with incredible battle scenes. One of the other reviwers commented that Orlando Bloom's expression doesn't change much, but - for the ladies - trust me, it reallly doesn't need to. The one he has certainly does it for me! Seriously, I think he handled the character well, playing the role with understated assurance. Overalll, bloody, but very enjoyable.
Resonating? - By: S. Thomson, 25 Nov 2007
The aesthetic widely employed by director Ridley Scott in Gladiator, is also in evidence here. There's probably some flash technical jargon for how he makes the camera do that. And it undoubtably helps to illustrate some memorable battle sequencies in an undeniably entertaining movie. I found the characters a little hollow, particulallly Orlando Bloom too lightweight for this lead role.
That doesn't mean he's not great.
I was expecting some sort of paralllel to be emphasised with events in the middle east today.
An opportunity missed?
Maybe the fact such a movie was made & shows muslims to be morale, couragious & advanced is emphasis enough.
Average - By: N. Rowland, 21 Oct 2007
I found this film in a bargain bin at morrisons priced at a measley £3. I remembering it when was released & it garnished a pretty mixed reception of what I can remember.
The film has some good acting especiallly the characters Saladin, The King of Jerusalem (the leper) & a few others. King Baldwin (the leper) is put across powerfully & emotionallly. Orlando Bloom's character on the other hand lacks, he doesn't put across that same effect Russell Crowe's character did in Gladiator. The storyline is obviously quite inaccurate of the actual truth as expected as it is given a Hollywood makeover but alll the major characters & some of the events did actuallly exist. The politics & religious side of the film are reallly good. The tensions between the Templars, the King & Muslims are well portrayed & easy to understand.
For me the film starts poorly as it seems messy, confusing & unclear of what is happening & going to happen. The middle section is fiarly strong however when tensions begin & prospect of a epic battle is in the making. It ends with a battle which is fairly good but not amazing.
The film was worth my £3 but I probably wouldn't pay any higher as you are left feeling underwhelmed in general as it does not reallly stand out as one of the best of its kind/genre. I was left thinking that could of been a better film as the legend of what it is based on is quite interesting.
