Episodes 17 to 20 - By: T. R. Alexander, 03 Apr 2007
Volume five of Stand Alone Complex begins with Chief Aramaki & Major Kusanagi on a trip to London for a conference but events spiral out of control when, while visiting an old friend Aramaki is caught up with a pair of thieves & held hostage. This is a better episode than I thought it was going to be & gives a nice portrait of Aramaki as he must deal with the situation he finds himself in with no backup. Episode 18 sees Section 9 protecting a foreign dignitary visiting a war memorial. This episode again heavily involves Aramaki & delves brings to light some of his back-story. Episode 19 focuses on a series of mass kidnappings that has included the daughter of an important official. The final episode of this volume sees Togusa return to the Laughing Man case where his investigation into the theft of seemingly unimportant records leads to serious consequences. All the episodes of this volume are action packed & the final one has a brilliant cliff-hanger.
The Laughing Man returns... - By: , 31 Aug 2005
This superb anime series continues with episodes 17-20 & like previous releases never disappoints. More closely resembling the original manga from creator Shirow Masamune than the film, the humour & style shows through. There are many anime/manga releases out there, many of which are of dubious quality, but this series has yet to put a foot wrong. All four episodes are excellent, but the final episode on the DVD "Re-View" stands out, as Section 9 continue on the trail of the Laughing Man, & ends with an unexpected cliffhanger which will leave you waiting for Volume 6.
