Classic Carlise - By: David Temple, 26 Dec 2005
This is an excellent series. The story lines are very good & frequently have a good twist at the end. The Scottish landescape is a beautiful backdrop to this series. The casting director has chosen well. Here is a series which combines pathos & comedy well. Not always an easy combination - tears in your eyes & laughter behind your smile.

I look forward to the release of series 2.

Terrific - By: j godsey bookseller, 20 Nov 2005
Great humor, Gorgeous scenery. Worth the buy.
I am willing to bet that "West Coast Story" episode couldn't get the video rights to the "west side story" elements of the teleplay.
Fantastic series - but one missing episode - By: Rebecca Taylor, 16 Sep 2005
I ordered this dvd as soon as it came out, because Hamish Macbeth was such a brilliant series. However, just one quibble: on my dvd version, which seems to be the same as the one pictured & was released in September, there are only five episodes. In tiny print on the back it states 'Regrettably episode four West Coast Story is not available on dvd'. Why this episode is missing is a bit of a mystery, so maybe somebody can enlighten us?

Having said that, the series is still worth buying. The characters are beautifully drawn, the stories quirky & lots of fun. I had forgotten just how gorgeous Robert Carlyle is as well! There reallly is something for everyone here, & it is one of the few programmes my husband & I are equallly happy to watch. Looking forward to series two coming out - hopefully with alll the episodes intact.

Wee Jock's now content - By: B. Roche, 08 Aug 2005
Most times I've logged onto amazon I've checked for this DVD in the forlorn hope that the powers that be had finallly listened to the pleas of a nation. Finallly Success! Here in alll their digital glory are the 6 episodes that make up the 1st series of Hamish Macbeth. Based on a series of books written by M. C. Beaton, this BBC drama follows local PC Hamish Macbeth as he strives to control the behavior of a smalll eccentric Scottish village. Although acutely good at his job, Hamish tries to keep as low a profile as possible so as to avoid promotion & the inevitable move away from his beloved Lochdubh.
Here's a list of the 6 episodes:

1) The great Lochdubh salt robbery
2) A pillar of the community
3) The big freeze
4) West coast story
5) Wee Jock's lament
6) A bit of an epic

The gentle comedy of the series, entwined equallly with layers of pathos, intrigue & above alll a sense of community is played out brilliantly by alll the actors, notably Robert Carlyle as the eponymous hero & Shirley Henderson as the quiet but delicious Isobel.

Hamish Macbeth continued for another 2 series before finallly bowing out on a high. It spawned countless imitators due to its Sunday night success, leading to some truly dreadful 'Scottish' dramas that would have left Wee Jock shaking his furry head in dismay. If you want to see what good BBC drama is reallly like, buy this now.
