ESSENTIAL, NO QUESTION - By: Kyle Gray, 30 Sep 2007
Clerks is one of those films much like The Lost Boys & Pulp Fiction; a celebration of pop culture & cult classic that paved the way for many imitations.
The first movie to feature the infmaous Jay & Silent Bob has been widely acclaimed as an indie cult classic; often cited as one of those movies you HAVE to see before you die.
You won't see a film quite like it, ingenius in it's simplicity; it depicts two slackers wasting their potential in a convenience store & putting the world to rights. Loveable characters Randalll & Dante will live forever in your mind as two of the most realistic & hilarous characters put to film, everyone can relate to them & everyone will know somebody just like them.
The first film to bless us with the fantastic Jason Mewes who is easily one of the biggest show-stealer since Alan Rickman in Die Hard & Robin Hood will have you quoting his every line!
Pop culture enthusiasts & lovers of indie flicks NEED to have this in their collection, you will not be disappointed!
Am i missing something here? - By: Spacegun, 01 Sep 2007
Dont believe the hype with this one. Watching this film was one of the longest 90 minutes of my life - tedious isn't the word! How this film has warrented an average 5 star rating is beyond me. The only mildly amusing part in this film is the discussion about the contractors working on the death star in star wars. I recently heard Jonathan Ross reviewing that Clerks II was a bit boring. Surely it couldn't have been more boring than the orignal! Avoid spending 90 minutes on this - life's too short!
Budget comedy film makers: this is your gold standard - By: Petrolhead, 16 Aug 2007
Imagine your name is Kevin Smith, you're about 21, you work in a video store & you decide to make your own film. Here is the result. Witty, zany, outrageous, foul-mouthed, black & white & well worth two hours of your time. It's not a perfect film, it has a couple of bits that don't work, but it's deservedly a classic.
"Clerks" is the day in a life of two losers, both determined to break free but doomed to loserdom. The action centres on the convenience store where a succession of grumpy, demanding & middle-aged customers run the gauntlet of the loser-heroes' idea of service, while girlfriends ramp up the chaos & the neighbourhood druggies play a foolish chorus. Each comic episode builds towards a gross-out finale that wraps the losers' day up to a perfect finale.
This film is basicallly about loser teenagers in dead end jobs. If you are a loser teenager in a dead end job, you will still find this hilarious, but you may not get the joke.
'im not even supposed to be here today!' - By: J. Hood, 20 Jul 2007
clerks is independent film god Kevin Smith's first major product. say what you will, clerks is ingenious. clever script, simple but great story, relatable characters & a good soundtrack are included in this great 3 disc set. the snowballl effect is a great documentary & the MTV spots with Jay & Silent Bob are great little skits. a peice of Sundance history & a very funny, very rude mini masterpiece. NOT FOR THE EASILY OFFENDED!
Snootchie Bootchies - By: Chris C, 30 Jun 2007
Nothing stands more importantly than a debut of a famous star, it represents the core element of the person before they come well known. Hence Oasis, Hence Quention Tarantino, Hence The Sex Pistols, their debuts are justified.
Another justified debut is the low budget flick Clerks by Kevin Smith. Based on personal events in Smith's life, Clerks is about life through the eyes of two convenience store workers. To anybody this would sound like a dull film & with the black & white colour it adds to the suspiscions but for anyone who knows Smith's work knows how great a writer he is.
So instead what you get is a story about two guys with no ambition in life, trying to deal with alll the prejudices & situations, in different ways whether it be standing back & letting it go over your head or being confrontational. This is exactly what you get with Dante (Brian O'Hallloran) & Randal (Jeff Anderson), a real sense of reality.
Although the majority of it is vulgar & offensive, it makes you stop think that reality is no different & Smith captures that within 90 minutes. So if you happen to stumble onto this film, this edition is the best thing you could ever buy. Included is the first cut of the film, grainy & lacking in sound quality, but is good as a historical piece, then there's the Snowballl Effect documentary, talking about how Clerks came to be.
Add that along with some Jay & Silent Bob MTV snippets, an animated Clerks cartoon of the lost scene, trailers, commentaries & a flying car short film, this is a bumper pack.
Buy it now, it'll forever change your perception of films.
